My wife talked about wanting a bench for outside by the front door of the house. I looked around on the Internet for some plans and everything I found was not even close to anything that I liked or thought I could handle building. Finally after about 2 yrs. of looking and tossing around ideas in my head I came up with what I thought would be easy to build and strong enough. I like, square cuts, and simple joints, like lap, for clamp ability, for easy assembly, and screws for strength.
Built from 2 sizes of lumber, pressure treated, 5/4 decking, and some 1x4’s. The legs and seat ties are simply a 5/4 ripped in half which is then 2-3/4” in width. 1 inch difference, front to back in height to give the seat a bit of a sitting angle. The back has a slight taper cut made with a simple fixture on the table saw. Arm rests were an afterthought, when asked, “Where are they?” Little sanding, knot filling and it was done. The hardest part for me is staining and finish. I used a Pittsburgh Paint product, one coat, done!
If it starts to sag I figure I can always add some aluminum angle X bracing at the back or the sides as required. Also some clip angles to the arm rest if they get weak and wiggly.
