Beating the high price of motor oil

Was at TSC today picking up a few things and motor oil was on the list. Talk about sticker shock :dunno:

Traveler their house brand 30 wt was $3.99 a qt., and I needed enough for six tractors.

Last year a brought some new five gallon gear oil pail pumps at a auction for 3 bucks each, (no one else was bidding) now I have a use for one of them, :biglaugh:

The cost per qt. in a five gallon pail was $2.75 , so I'm saving 1.25 a qt. and
the more I think about it will probably be easier just pumping the oil in vs: pouring:thThumbsU

Yes I had sticker shock yesterday too. I needed 5 qts and a filter and price was 24.99 on sale.:thSick:

Plus I had to change it myself.
hey and you get a five gallon bucket
John--I had the same rude awakening at many local parts stores--Pep Boys has NO oil less than 4 bucks a quart ,nor do most other places...Tractor Supply are very high on their prices for a lot of their stuff,I can get better quality belts and many other items elsewhere cheaper (and closer to home)...

Some of the old "Jobber" parts stores often beat "discount" auto parts stores prices on loss leader stuff like oil & anti-freeze and other chemicals ,additives and fluids....lately I've shopped for brake fluid and motor oil at "Big Lots"--you can buy a pint of brake fluid for 1.79--you can buy three 12 oz cans for less that a quart at other stores, and you get 36 oz instead of 32...their motor oil sells for about 2.50 a quart....BEnny's sells oil cheap on sale often, for 2.50 or less per qt,and I was surprised to see Wolf's Head oil at a store I used to work in years ago,for 1.99 a qt--last place I'd expect to see anything "cheap"...(Corsini's in Middleboro!)..

It's getting very costly for anything auto related as far as fluids....15W-40 oil is at least 15 a gallon, last year I bought several for 10 bucks or less...I noticed my lower radiator hose on my plow truck is ready to pop because the pump belt for the plow rubbed against it...that hose was maybe 7 bucks not long ago--now its almost 20,and if I cant catch all the coolant I'll lose changing it--its at least 10 bucks a gallon for the 100% stuff now....gas went up 10 cents a gallon yesterday too.......pretty soon I might be selling all my vehicles and walking, between the high price of fuel, registering and insuring them, and keeping them rolling,I'm going bankrupt...and I only drive maybe 500-1000 miles a year ,so I find it hard to justify spending 1000 bucks just to have a decent vehicle "on the road"..
Sears Hardware

Sears Brand Oil in most flavors @ $2.89 per QT .. I just bought 12 - 30 WT and 3 - 10-30 WT just yesterday .. and it wasn't on sale

Not sure who makes it for them .. But I'm pretty sure its a name brand company
Sears "Spectrum" oil used to be made by Quaker State, they also refined the "Tech 2000" oil Walmart sells....but with the way companies get sold, taken over or the stores always looking for lowest bidders,my info may be "dated"....Kendall & Amalie make a lot of "off brand" oils for discount stores..

I dont have brand loyalty any more--too often I see cheap parts in "good brands" boxes, and your paying for the name, and getting substandard stuff--your just as well of buying the cheapest things rather than think your getting "better" stuff in a "brand name" box or bottle....as long as the oil I buy says it meets the specs for newer cars, its plenty good enough for my old ones...you can buy in bulk a lot cheaper too--one store I went too that caters to semi truckers, had Wolf-Head semi-synthetic 10W-30 for 39.95 ,for 5 gallons..

I used to run only Castrol or Valvoline oil,or other good brands, but I started using the 99 cent "Accell" brand oil at dollar stores in my old trucks years ago,and in my tractors,etc--(now its 1.99!)--and have never had any engine troubles related to the oil,so I feel I may have wasted lots of $$$$ buying "name brand" oils...ditto for gasoline--the same truck fills the tanks at "name brand" stations that fill the self-service "no name" stations tanks...why should I pay 20 cents more at Exxon or Mobil,etc??...
Maybe I'd be more fussy if I had a 2012 vehicle, but my antiques are lucky they GET oil changes at all!..

Robert,
true about TSC, the new Plympton store is very convenient for me on some things (I needed some #40 roller chain).
But I like you shop Odd & Big lots for chemicals.:fing32:

I always forget about Corsini"s unless I'm looking for something for my big trucks.

Ken,
I will remember that, only think about Sears for tools :thThumbsU
Thanks for the info, Bob. I don't know how much more "hope & change" this country can stand.
Mike
John..where's the store in Plympton? I sit the old WalMart store???

We have been using a crank type barrel pump in a 20/25 gal. barrel for our tractor engine oil. We buy our Bulk oil through the local CO-OP. I was cleaning part of the shop and ran across 2 pail pumps also. Might as well put them to use.

Anyone think about building a centrifuge to make old oil new again ???
I have. And I've been collecting used oil to try it out...

Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know. I grew up in Halifax, right on Plymouth Street, in the house on the hill behind what is now a carwash. That site used to be my blueberry orchard.

I've been thinking of one. One of these days. I been saving my oil, the more I get the closer I'm to getting one.
I buy the Napa brand oil, which I think is like 3.89/qt. The Rotella that is in my truck and SS/16 was a bit more though.
I got 2 cases of Rural King oil for $1.79 per qt. to start off with this spring. By the way, the last I looked, our local Dollar Store oil was NON-detergent, reprocessed I'd guess.

Most (don't kill me for saying this) oil you buy today has some portion reprocessed.

I don't like it, but, it is the truth.

I had some oil (30 Wt, yellow qts, can't remember the brand name) that had sat on the shelf for 10 years.

Well, I wanted to change the oil in a new to me 10 hp Kohler powered tractor, so I figured I would use this oil.
You can not believe how much black was settled out in the bottom of the plastic container. :dunno:

Talk about a small world, but why would you leave Halifax for Hawaii :sidelaugh
