Here's the part number 2N-10721 you can get the top cover from several different aftermarket companies.
Im betting steiner would have them they have a lot of sheet metal parts and this is one that goes bad on a lot of 8ns, or for that matter any tractor where the battery sits i gotta replace mine to but because i have more parts to replace im gonna wait for this if you do replace it what i have done on a couple other tractors is put a piece of rubber down on the battery cover bottom i found it at tractor supply it has sticky material on the back if you don't want to stick it down just don't peel the cardboard over the sticky stuff. If you don't want to use the rubber a thin piece of wood will keep your new investment protected for a little while.

There are two types of battery covers, some where for the 9N/2N and some for the 8N..

Many where discarded or lost out in the fields..It is believed, by many, that they where there to protect the owner from sparks that may occur when using the metal gas cans of yesterday year.

If you are referring to the battery cover that Ken shows in the right(red type) photo, it only works with a battery of the correct size battery and post location, otherwise it won't work. When I converted to 12 volt EI system I had to remove the cover all due to the post location on the battery, although the battery was the same size as the original Ford battery.
I think this battery cover was use to protect the battery when filling the gas tank...spilling gas on the battery may have prevented a fire. etc.
