I have a John Deere 130 and recently it has started backfiring after i shut it off, i am not too experienced with small engines so why is it backfiring?? is this a sign that something is going to break, or does the carb or exhaust just need a good cleaning?

Have you tried a different throttle setting when shutting it down? Like maybe half throttle for 30 seconds prior to turning off the key?

I always shut it down at the lowest throttle position. Are you saying that i should try half, sometimes it smokes after i restart the mower within about 15 minutes, it is somewhat rare but when it happens it lets out a big cloud of white smoke and continues smoking for a little until it slowly starts to die down. Is this a sign of my piston rings starting to wear out?
