Hello everyone,

A all around newbie here both to the forum and tractor ownership. So I just bought a B 414 and it has a couple of minor issues. One of them is the PTO clutch not working but I think after searching that I have a pretty good idea how to troubleshoot. The other is with my loader. If I put a load on it, it drifts down fairly quickly. With no load it stays just fine. I don't see any fluid leaking on the outside, at least not in the volume that it is drifting. Are there any secret ways of determining what I have that is blowing by? I assume it's either the cylinders or the a control valve but I was hoping there was a way to check without tearing the whole thing apart. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

The control valve may be leaking by, but it's expected due to the clearances around the spool which allows the spool to be moved by hand.

The more likely culprit is the cylinder seals on an older loader. It takes a lot of rubbing for a chrome plated spool to wear against well lubricated cast iron, not quite so much for rubber seals and o-rings to abrade when rubbing on a well lubricated steel cylinder wall.

New seals and o-rings can be found at hydraulic shops and many on line retail sellers and are a lot cheaper than a new valve set.

The simple way is to disassemble the cylinders and retrieve the wearable parts and present them to the counterman at a local hydraulics shop for cross referencing. Chances are, he has all the parts in stock and the one's that aren't can usually be brought in within 3 days.

While money can be saved by shopping online, the information specific to your cylinders available from the counterman is priceless. Ask questions!

thanks Bob,

Also good advice. I was hoping to save time and not tear things apart to find the issue but your advice does make perfect sense and it will probably be worth my time to just do it and do it right.

thanks again,

Chris
