B&S Carb help

How do I know what Carb I have on my Briggs 8hp motor that is for a '73 Snapper Comet?

Here are the numbers on the motor plate:
190702 0867-01 73081 011

Also where would I look for a replacement new or refurbished?

I removed the carb from the motor with the intentions of rebuilding, but the main jet was seized up and I may have done damage to the threading in my attempts to remove it :( I started drilling it out with a small bit, stepping up in size but it hasn't budged just removed the material and there is still some of that jet inside. I don't know what else to do now to remove the rest of it.

Any advice?

Thanks Two Cycle! The price for a new Carb is more expensive than I thought it would be :banghead3

so I may need to try and come up with another way to remove this jet that I've mostly drilled out. Anyone have any tips for me now? Is there some way to break it out?

you might find a used carb that can be cleaned up.

Not sure how much is left, or what it looks like. But could you perhaps do something like take a small flat-bladed screwdriver (preferably one with kind of sharp edges, to bite in better), and maybe tap it into what's left? Get it to bite into what remains of the jet, then try to turn the screwdriver with some pliers? Perhaps what you've drilled out would make the jet easier to turn, if you can get a grip on it.

Maybe that's a terrible idea, just thinking out loud.

If it's buggered up real bad I wouldn't worry about it too much. A 8 hp briggs shouldn't be too hard to find used.Keep digging til it's out or ruined. lol

Put a AD up on craigs list in the wanted section. I'm betting you can find the whole engine/wt carb for a good price,,it's worth a try.

Also some scrap yards save their mowers,, for sale, of parts. Call around see if there are any that do this. And repair shops have a bone yard of left over items.

Havent been out to the shop in a few days but if its a vert shaft I may have one you can have for shipping will check sometime today and get back ED
I'm not sure what the carb on a older 8 hp looks like. Need picture.
I know I have a carb off of a 11hp and a 12 hp briggs in my garage I would have no problem giving up. Just not sure they would be the same.(i don't think they are)

And if you really are having a problem finding one. I am pretty sure I could get one for pennies at a salvage yard around the corner from me. I would need a picture to be sure.
It's a option for you,,I go there often so not a problem to look if needed.

Flash here is the pic of my carb. I've looked it over pretty well and can't find any type of marking on it.





Here is the best picture I could get of the main nozzle you can kind of see a little bit of the shiny brass on the inside of it:


From what I can gather it's called a One Piece Flo-jet Carb. I may have finally just destroyed the top threads for the jet trying to hammer a flat blade screwdriver into and turning :banghead3 so unless I can remove it and retap it the same size it's toast.

Here is the project the carb goes it :D

Crap, I'm sorry if that little idea didn't really pan out :sorry1: You don't need any more suggestions from me, but could an appropriate-size Torx bit perhaps grab just the brass, via the hole you drilled through it? You might be able to grab & twist just the jet, without touching the threads? An Allen key might also work, but if there was a Torx bit that was the right size, it would have more "teeth" for grabbing the brass.

A LEFT HANDED DRILL BIT IS YOUR FRIEND!!!!! Go down to Northern or wherever your preferred tool place is and buy a cheap set of left handed bits. Once it gets started it will probably grab it and snatch that thing right out of there. I have done a bunch of those carbs that way.

In addition to a left-handed drill bit, there are removal tools that are also left handed that look like a piece of hex-sided metal that got twisted a partial turn while hot, and left to cool that way. It may be more or less than six 'pointed', but it is much stubbier than a normal extractor, along the order of 1/4" or less, and fits into a socket wrench, or can be turned by a box/open end wrench.
I have had exactly ZERO luck using any of the longer extractors that appear similar to a drill bit. They have broken every time... and left not only the broken bolt or stud, but the extractor also, which was brittle, and impossible to drill into. A lose lose lose proposition. Next time, I'm going for the stubbies.

You can also get "straight fluted extractors". I have one, but ended up getting the screw out without it, so never really tried it. But it's basically a tapered piece with some teeth that grab the screw. The taper helps ensure it can get nice and tight. You drill a hole, tap this in, the teeth bite into the screw, then twist it out (or at least that's the idea).

DJ here is what I have its not the same the intake flang looks diffferent and rod for air cleaner not the same not sure if it will work so if you think it will work let me know ED

the carbs on the 10 and 11 are different than the 8. I'll try to get time to see if I have a decent 8 carb body out in the garage.

You have already contacted me and I asked for a picture of the damage. Haven't heard back but I did get on here and see the picture you have posted. First of all, forget the easy outs..the thing is corroded in there too tight for that to work. Second, you don't have near enough of the nozzle drilled out. Keep going until there is almost none left, without getting into the threads of course. Get a small punch and grind it down to a very sharp point on one side where it looks like a tiny wood chisel (kinda hard to explain) Carefully start peeling away the brass as it is now thin enough to fold away from the threads once you get under it. You may have to work at it for a while. You may nick a few threads but that'll be ok. just don't do a hatchet job on it. I've done hundreds of nozzle removals and have never completely damaged a carb. Good luck and if you don't want to do it yourself, send it on.

Thanks Mark for the tip. I will keep working at it, but in the mean time I got a replacement today.

Placed a wanted ad on CL as someone here suggested and got a response last night. Picked it up after work. It is the exact same carb as mine.

Next it's time to put it on the engine and try to fire it up!
