Do the 70's vintage B&S 14-16HP cast iron singles have low-oil shutoffs?

My cast iron 16 hp briggs ,does not have a low oil shut off....40 years ago the engine companies thought the customers were responsible enough to check things like oil.

Thanks - that's what I thought. Just trying to figure out why mine won't run...has me completely baffled so far. Has air, fuel and spark, but doesn't even cough.

Assuming it has compression as well (the last magic ingredient in the list of air, fuel, and spark), possibly your ignition timing is off somehow? Sheared flywheel key, etc.

If it ever lost the welch plug at the bottom of the intake elbow, the engine could have been dusted. The first thing to go will be the intake valve clearance, which will make starting very difficult. Next, will be the rings. Add some oil to the cylinder to raise the compression and see what happens.

Yes they do, its the same method used by Tecumseh for some years...When the oil goes below a certain level, the rod breaks, and the engine shuts off.

But seriously, no..low oil shutoffs didnt really come to be until the 90's.
