On Craig's List, I just found a pretty nice Black & Decker dual blade electric mower that just needed a couple of clevis pins for the handle. It runs fine, blades are rusty but sharp, and it came with two extension cords, each probably 50 ft, 1 16AWG and the other probably 18 AWG. A steal for $25!

The last image shows the repair tag that was still on the handle. I can't quite make out the date. It looks almost like 1951 but more likely 1981 or maybe 1971. It's a model 8020, 120VAC, 10A, 1.5HP, 7500 RPM. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner when it's running. Apparently it's vintage 1970-1971:

It seems to cut pretty well. I like the dual blade and the flip-over handle. It has a solid cast metal deck and seems to be made well. Looks like I got an oldie but goodie! I was thinking about trying to convert one of these electric mowers to cordless, but I think I'll just get my electric Broadmoor working and add an outlet to it so I can haul this mower along and use it to trim areas where the tractor can't go.

I had the Craftsman version of this growing up. My brother had a very bad habit of running over the cord. In retrospect, I think this was intentional - every time the cord got chopped, *I* had to repair it and finish cutting the lawn because my father was torqued at my brother.

My parents had one of these when I was in elementary school. I hated using it since everyone else in the neighborhood had gas mowers.

I seem to remember it had flat belts.

That doesn't look like a lawn or garden tractor to me, so I'm at a loss as to why it is posted on this site instead of the lawn mower site?

I also don't believe that house current electric push mowers are in the spirit of what this forum sub-section is all about. If it was nuclear powered, hydrogen powered, battery powered, steam powered or used chipmunks on a rotary wheel to spin the blades then it still would not fit in because it is not a tractor.

Should this thread have not been moved months ago or am I missing something here?

Eh, its an interesting little mower, even if its not a tractor. (Especially going through all the work and parts to make a 2-blade deck with tiny blades on it.)

And I like the idea of being able to plug in an electric mower to a tractor with a generator to do clean-up work and mowing where the tractor doesn't fit. The roundabout solutions are often the most fun or interesting to think up.

Its also poetic looking at one of these little plug-in mowers. We love our tractors because we can go almost anywhere, and do almost anything with them. Fill up the tank, and head off into rising sun for a day of work. Then you have this mower, doomed to drag its electric tail behind it everywhere it goes, limited to graze 100 feet from an electrical outlet.

Why go to the trouble of dragging a separate generator along when a 17" gas powered push mower will do the same work without a cord or generator?

Perhaps I am showing my age when I say that I don't find that mower interesting in the slightest way. The Black and Decker "Orange Era" is very familiar to me. It marked the downfall of a once highly respected name in the power tool industry. They went from making high quality, well-made electric tools for the tradesman to the throw-away home-owner junk that would make the Chinese blush with embarrassment. For quite a while, it was common to see at least one of those mowers sitting at the end of the driveway on garbage day because it cost more to repair one then what it cost for a new one. The same held true for their power drills, saws, sanders, weed-wackers, hedge trimmers etc.

B & D had to buy de Walt in order to get back into the tradesman tool business because no self-respecting contractor wanted tools that said Black & Decker on the label.

All of that aside..... MTF has separate divisions for tractors and push mowers. I don't understand why this thread was not moved to the correct division back in June.

I have a sun beam mower that is a twin blade 18" cut. We got it for free in a lot of stuff. It looks very similar to that, but is a teal/blue colour. I dont have any pictures though.

It is neat none the less. Thanks for sharing:thumbup:
