NY DOT's contractor is repaving Route 6 for about a 10 mile stretch by me. They are currently milling the road and about 3/4 complete.

So Tim, my son, taking after myself, stops by and asks the flag guy what they are doing with the millings. The flagman points to his boss and says to go talk to him.

Tim talks to the supervisor/foreman and asks what they are doing with the millings.

Foreman says "You want some?" Tim says " Yes, how much for a load?"
Foreman say, "Nothing if your close by." Tim tells him he lives about 1-1/2 mile away. They were just finishing up for the day, so the last truck dumped the last load at our place (about 1/2 of 20 yard tandem dump truck). Tim gave the driver $10 bucks for his trouble. Supposed to get another full load today.
So, last night Tim started tearing up the grass/soil in front of the barn, getting ready to put down the millings this weekend.


Looks like it's gonna be a busy weekend, between this and framing out the front porch.:tango_face_wink:

I will post pics of the finished project.
Debating whether to put landscape fabric underneath to help control weed growth. I know seeds will germinate anyway from being blown into the area. Just a thought.

Good move by your son, John. Do you have to roll that in or just drive on it?

I would put down a weed barrier. It's bound to help somewhat. Of course, you can just spray any weeds that come up.

Probably combination of both. I have a old metal roller from my dad to drag behind one of the JDs, a hand tamper for the tight spots, and the Kubota itself to pack it down.
I have to run to HD/Lowes tonight for the deck lumber, so I will pick up some landscape fabric. Little extra cost may be worth it

You won't regret the landscape fabric. Some weeds may grow but their roots can get only so deep with the fabric under there. It does blow around in the slightest wind without any material on it so get some wooden or otherwise compost-able stakes.

I did the 3B, 2A stone then millings 14 years ago and didn't put down weed blocker. Guess what even with the ground being 4 inches below the surface I have grass, weeds, trees growing in it. :tango_face_crying:

Tim got the half load spread this weekend. The full load is supposed to be delivered today, but that was not free.
I guess they caught on and figured they could make some money (or at least pay for fuel) so that load will cost $100. Still cheaper than a tandem load of Item #4 from the quarry.

The use of landscape fabric under the asphalt millings won't do much to prevent weeds. Over time, the dust and dirt in the air settles into the millings and that is what the weeds grow with. What the landscape fabric does do is prevent the asphalt millings from being forced into the soil as you drive over them.

What the landscape fabric does do is prevent the asphalt millings from being forced into the soil as you drive over them.

We ended up not putting fabric down. I understand the millings will settle into the clay below, but we're not going to be driving any large loads over it and will eliminate the mud and soft spots to some degree. I will keep it sprayed to help with the weed control couple times a year.

I think there will be enough left over to make a nice pad for the camper when parked over the winter.

From what the foreman told my son, most of it is going to be recycled, but it has to be trucked out since no asphalt company in the area has equipment to do that. They are doing about a 10 mile stretch of the road, so that is a lot of old asphalt. Once they are done paving (about 1/2 done as of last night) I'm sure they will work on cleaning up the piles at various locations.

Years ago my dad use to get left over blacktop at the end of the day when he worked for the county, (they used to dump it at the end of the day) Now they can keep it hot overnight. We,d be spreading it, and raking it, and hand tamping it. Then he'd dust the top with cement powder. It wasn't smooth like a roadway, but it was durable and the grass and weeds never grew through it. ( back in the late 60's)

Well--hello there-John.:tango_face_smile:

You got a good deal- there--even for 100. That stuff will be there forever--I worked heavy/road construction for 25 years, before retireing----and we re-used a lot of it for the asphalt plant......Cuts down on your operating overhead. Hauling the 'spoils' as they are called = several times hurts the job profit .
Anyway--they will stand the test of time--the sun/hot temps will work on that surface, over time, to bond some of it back together........

A neighbor up the road from me had his driveway lengthened and widened last year--and they used the millings--looks like they added about 4-5" depth--and wider, to his drive--then after he drove on it awhile--they came back and used a driveway sealer (napha based) on it--has hardened up pretty good.

If you can--I'd stockpile a couple more piles of it for future use.:tango_face_wink:...Just saying. Ain't going to get any cheaper==with all goverment regulations.

It sure is.

I think we have enough for awhile.
I still have about 1/2 load left. Will fill in some low spots in front of barn and then probably make a parking pad for the camper with whats left over.
