I purchased a Venture boat trailer to replace an undersized Shoreland'r that came with the boat in 1989.

The Shortland'r came with a complete breakdown of all the parts I could ever need for repairs, but the Venture came with nothing at all. Venture can't provide such a list.

The Venture has 10" drum hydraulic brakes.

I know Atwood is one brand of trailer brakes, and I'm assuming there are others.
Are all 10" drum brake components -- no matter which manufacturer makes them?

Besides shoe dimensions that can be easily measured, I'm wondering about items such as return springs and wheel cylinders that (like car parts) may be very specific.

Or do I need to consider replacing "everything" from the backing plate out to the drum if anything needs attention?

Nope on your answer to the drum brakes, as far as I know. I worked on a lot of trailers years back, for a tree service/landscape company--and the axles, themselves are made and shipped, pretty complete from wheel to wheel.

Most axles have a tag on them somewhere--just have to feel around the tube--that will give you the info you need. Then you can look on-line or in a catalog to find what you need. Just as cheap and easy to replace it all to begin with--you have to pull it apart anyway.:dunno: Clean and measure everything--and leave one side still hooked up so you can go back and reference it (don't ask me how I know that)
Clean and save Any of the old [parts and put away in a can. Does it have a small battery for surge brakes--then you have the little magnets to deal with...
After the trailer place here in town closed--I always ordered the parts I needed from "******* "--and got them very quickly.
Here you go-

******* Trailer Supplies - 20 National Branch Locations - Home[/B
PS__I see now--you have hydraulic brakes--so you also need to check the tubing all way down--and you wouldn't have surge brakes with these...

Thanks for your response.
Sorry I didn't get back sooner.
For some reason I didn't receive an e-mail that a response had been posted.
I probably hit an incorrect button somewhere.

After the great paperwork provided with the too-small ShoreLand'r, I'm not the least bit impressed with the complete lack of documentation with this Venture.

When I contacted Venture seeking info, they indicated they had no specific details for my trailer (built based on boat details I provided - so I assume not exactly an off-the-shelf purchase).
But they did provide links to two complete backing plates and components if I want to swap everything out.

Not exactly what I expected. I guess ShoreLand'r spoiled me.

Check out etrailer.com They have a ton of trailer parts on there. Also depending on where in Pa you are, there is a trailer supply place near Lebanon called Weaver Distributing. I bought a set of complete axles from them last year.

Well most I have seen have been all pretty much the same. Maybe there is just one or two companies making them?? Atwood, and Dico seem to be the big players... I would look for a stamping on the backing plates and then go to their sites, and see whats out there. My guess is the trailer companies spec a set weight load axle assy, and they pop it on the trailer ready to go. brakes and all... im sure they just don't know who made the components that were used on the axle you got.

Ing444 is very right--I believe. Like said--they either bid out or just outright buy the whole axles/spring setups, most of the time--complete. I just saw an 18-wheeler flatbed -trailer on the highway last week, that was loaded down with axles--strapped on top of each other--headed somewhere. They had the end of each axle wrapped in heat shrink stuff.
Dexter is/was another big manufacturer...
