Haven't even looked at it yet, but will tomorrow. Asked a local garage guy if he knew where I could pick up a used garden tractor, and he said his friend had a Poulan for sale for $400. Said to come back in a couple days. Didn't think to ask how old, etc. Poulan isn't a brand name for L&G tractors that comes to mind right away for me. ??

I believe that Poulan Pro branded tractors are made by Husqvarna, which also makes tractors under their own name as well as others, like Weedeater, Ariens and some Craftsman models.

I've only ever seen Poulan Pro lawn tractors, but they might make some models that are Garden Tractors.

I'm with Sean.....in 14 years in the OPE business I've never seen a Poulan garden tractor. Even their largest ones are too light to do much more than mow and pull a lawn cart.

They are made by AYP/Electrolux so parts are available online and through some dealerships throughout the country and are no better or worse than most other lawn tractors of today.

If you need just a lawn mower and the Poulan is in decent condition offer him $250-$300. It's the "off season" now and mowers are hard to sell. If it needs much work at all, beyond a tune-up and general service I'd offer $250 max.

If you need a real garden tractor for gardening/snow removal type work, thank him and pass it on. You'll be better off waiting on a heavier built tractor.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Wife and I talked it over and decided it wasn't a good idea. My mechanical aptitude has never gone much beyond oil & air filter changing, and spark plugs and v belts. Occasional simple troubleshooting; but would be at a loss if anything major happened; so decided to either buy new, or fairly new. I stopped by and told the guy just that and apologized for any inconvenience. He said no problem and that he appreciated me coming back to let him know.
I'm in no hurry. Yard only has the rye grass that the contractor put down for now. Might get one fairly soon though, and a cart. A lot of good sized rocks in the yard, and I don't have anything to haul them away with.
Again, thanks guys !
