Another seat upgrade

2041 Views 12 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  8086bruce
Since someone started the "arms race" with seat upgrades on the 500 series tractors, I'd thought that I would share mine. The tractor is obviously an X540, the upgrade is from an X748 courtesy of Brett (aka Minnie Me?).

Not much seat time since the change over, we had rain and hail today. While pulling branches around a parking lot after the storm, I sure liked the higher back and the suspension action from the base. Thanks Brett!

Looks great AZJDpilot!

I am releived that the seat made it all the way to Az from Pa, unscathed.. I had my doubts about UPS and made sure it was insured for JD replacement cost! :)
Hey looks great! Looks like you sit much higher do you like that?
One more ? did you have to take the rear pan off to switch the bases? Thank you!

I did not take the pan off but I had to loosen it up so I could get at the bolts that hold on the seat rails. I just about mounted it on the original rails when I noticed the seat adjustment lever was different and getting in the way. So instead of trying to bend the lever to the correct angle I decided to change the rails. Thinking of it now I should have just changed the right side rail that has the adjustment lever. :fing20:

The picture shows the 540 lever and the hard right angle it takes. The 748 lever angles out straight out into the center of the two rails. The picture shows the two screw bolts that hold the pan to their frame supports that I removed. There are also four bolts on each side in front of the rear tires that hold the pan to the center console and to the frame that I loosened or removed in order to lift the pan enough to do the work.

That was a concern for me too but I have not noticed any difference. I'll pay more attention today and try to take a few measurements to see if that is true. The 748 seat does have three different pin positions that I checked and settled on the middle one for my favorite. The lower one would have appealed to some of my younger members of my crew that have a tougher time reaching the pedals.

AZDPilot,

So you wound up having to loosen the pan? Remember I said on the phone, on the 700's the seat rail bolts thread right into the frame of the machine. Is this not the case on your 500 series?
Hey thank you for the pics and again great j:trink39:eek:b!
AZDPilot,

No, the rails are bolted to the pan. I used some 3/4" long carriage bolts to bolt the new rails to the pan. Had I been able, or wanted to bend that rod into place I would have just bolted it on the same rails. It looked like it would have taken some heat on the rod to help bend it to the correct position. Loosening the pan was really pretty simple and didn't take too long so I went that route instead.

So the bolts from the org. rails would not work with the new rails?
No, because the bolts were part of the rail, I think. I tapped them with a hammer a couple of times and they didn't budge so I just used different bolts. I had to just slightly grind the head of the carriage bolt to make them fit but it only took a few minutes.

As far as the seat highth, I believe there is very little difference and nothing that I could notice. I did my best to measure too and got simliar results. Anyway, got plenty of pictures if you have anymore questions.

Plus even if it's sitting higher in the photos, when you actually sit in the seat the suspension does compress some.
Hey thanks for the info!
