Kohler 26HP V-Twin on a DGS6500.

Last year, The engine started making a surging noise when warmed up but not under load. I solved the problem by changing out the spark plugs.

The tractor has started making this noise again, so I changed to plugs and it's still doing it.

So i'm thinking if it is related to spark, It could be the wires...

But I don't know how to change them.. do I have to take apart the whole top of the engine to get to the (distributor cap/ignition coil?.. or am I using car terms to describe a completely different part on a small engine?)

Once I find them, does anyone know the specs for replacement wires?

OR - any other thoughts for fixing the surging issue? I've already investigated replacing the fuel filter and will do that as soon as my replacement part arrives.

Thanks

I'm not sure how old your tractor is but I would seriously doubt that plug wires are the problem.

This is a 2007 model. Help me understand a bit your reasoning, as my experience level is not very high on these matters. My thought was simply if last time I fixed it - it was a spark issue - and this time it's happening it's not the plugs - next thing up the chain is the wire, so I figured I'd troubleshoot them one step at a time.

You are assuming you fixed it.. But it may have been the float sticking in the carburator and it may have just "unstuck" or it may have been something else.

But that's just the way my mind works!

Unless they're physically damaged, plug wires last a long time.

Edited to add: In looking at the Kohler manual, it appears you have to replace the entire ignition module for each cylinder as the plug wires are not removable.

I would check the governor linkages for dirt or sticking.
