Hey all I just got finished putting my grandpa's Custom 10XL back together with the new ignition. Started right up and after a little tweaking on the carb its not running too bad. As far as I can tell the generator is not charging though. Can someone instruct me on how to flash the field on this tractor? After sitting for 8 years or so im hoping thats all it needs. Thanks!

If the S/G started the tractor, it doesn't need to be flashed. It will probably need to be taken apart and have the brush job done. A 40+ year old S/G will have a little trouble charging, or it may not at all in your case. It will look like someone ground up some coal and put it in the
S/G case.

Aha thank you. I had kinda wondered about that. So hopefully brushes and maybe have the commutator cleaned up will do it. Just out of curiosity, what the easiest way to go about troubleshooting this? Im assuming it could also be the voltage regulator?

I also wanted to add that before I installed this starter/gen I did a test I saw somewhere online...I hooked a jumper pack up to spin the starter up, then remove the 12v and while it was coasting down put the 12v on the field terminal. This stopped the spinning pretty quickly. Is this a good way to verify that the gen should charge?

Well judging by my little knowledge and the test I mentioned, I believe it needs a new reg. Got one on order from psep. Although as said before I feel sure the gen could use some attention also. Will probly take it into the shop over the winter.

Good to hear you got it running and it is charging as it should. I ordered a new voltage regulator to go on my 40 year old Sears ST16 and hope to get it charging as it should.
