Advise on Purchasing Mower.

My Troy Built (lowes) finally died after about 8 years. I am now looking for a good quality mower. I'm sort of lost when it comes to "true" dealer brand mowers vs. Lowes and Home Depot Mowers. How can you tell the difference in the two? Is the Quality of a "True" dealers CC really any better than the ones you buy a Home Depot or Lowes? I'm currently looking at purchasing a Cub Cadet 1641 which has about 500 hours on it. Its in VERY good condition from what I can tell. Would this be a good option for me? This one still has the Dealership sticker on the back of it that shows it was purchased locally from a dealer and not HD or Lowes. I'm seeing these priced anywhere from $1000 to $1500 and appear to be in lesser condition that this one. I can actually purchase this one from my father-in-law for $500. He purchased it to re-sale when he won it at a estate auction. He's selling it to me for what he has in it. Thank you for any help.

First off, you can't go wrong with that 1641, and it looks to be in better condition than most I've looked at over the last year.

What's the difference between the box store models and the dealership units? Stronger steering, stronger frame, stronger axles and differentials, strong hydrostatic transmissions. All this translates into longevity, serviceability, and capability that you can't touch with an LT. :) These tractors or meant to do more than mow a small lot. Plow, haul, till, turn soil, snowblow, etc...

I would snag that tractor up in a heart beat.
You should probably tell us what you intend to do with it and what your lot is like. A flat half acre in the suburbs is entirely different than 3 acres of hills.

Regardless, that a good price for that equipment, assuming it meets your needs.
Cub 1641 = quality , modern garden tractors sold by big box stores are meant to be sold cheap. So guess how they are built ??

Some smaller tractor (80s John Deere 108, Simplicity Regent) would work well for my 1/4 acre, but I have an old Cub Cadet 128.

EDIT: I also have a (crushed by large tree) JD 108, simplicity Regent, and Allis Chalmers B10, and a 8hp Wizard LT. They all need some work.

By all means.........get the cub! I'm NOT against Lawn Tractors, as long as I have a garden tractor when I need it. That's what made it easier to sell my 2146.......I also owned a 2550. The Deere LX178 I bought to do some light mowing would NEVER have been bought without the 2550 being by my side! Some things I do with the garden tractor would tear up the drive on a light mowing machine. With a GT, you get the best of both worlds......you can mow and you can really pull.

If you are looking at a cub 1000 series, or JD 100 series, they are the same at the dealer or big box stores. Better service at the dealer, and the price is usually the same. Dealers offer higher end models that the big box stores don't, and actually some of the lower end models that the big box stores don't. So if you are looking at a garden tractor, you can get a 2000 series cub at a dealer but not at home depot.

Edit: Go for that cub! It looks in great shape, for $500 you cannot go wrong!

Ditto on getting a GT. It's like building your dream shop. ALWAYS overdo it!

Keep in mind that NO vehicle has too much power and the garage that's too big has yet to be built!
I like yer style.

:p
Look at that 1641. It's beautiful. Please take her home! Last generation of Cubs produced before the full-on MTD makeover!
