Add-ons for my 180?

916 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Jim_WV
I'm a JD newbie, having just purchased my 180 a few weeks ago and only seriously considering/researching JD's (on this forum primarily) a few additional weeks before that.

While I understand that my 180 is no heavy lifter as far as lawn tractors go, it obviously is more robust than a lot of other big box entry-level riding mowers.

What kind of add-ons and accessories are recommended for this vintage of 100-series units? I have the double grass bagger and a high-back seat. I don't really have any other extra needs at this point, but interested in what all is/was offered and used by others here.

Don't push it too hard Scotty, they were good tractors but the transmission was the weak link.I changed out 2 transmissions on a friend of mines 180,same setup as yours with a double bagger. That one was abused from day one and it mowed a lot of grass for many years.
Cementhead is right, I wouldn't push the transaxle too hard. They offered snowblowers and plows. I would not like to think of the grease in transaxle at 5 below !
I used mine to mow with repaired trans, seem good other than the second gear skip. Treat the machine nicely, no clutch drop or pulling house! You should be fine for normal use!

Normal use is all I ever had planned, but just wondered what was out there. How about the occasional towing of a utility cart (if I ever get one) or lawn roller? I know the rollers are super-heavy, and that usage would only be once every year or two. But I also don't want to strip out some part of the tranny by critically overworking it either, even once.

Ours has been used to pull a roller, a cart, and it's tow-behind bagger. Never had an issue with the trans. Last year it lost spark, and it has sit since. We never even took that thing above 3rd gear.
Which 180 do you have ?.

LT180
Older 180

I would advise not pulling a heavy lawn roller with either, especially the LT180 as it has the K46 transmission in it. A yard cart should not be a problem as long as you're not hauling heavy loads.

I have both an LT180 and two older 180's. Snowblowers, snow blades, and carts to go 'round. So far none have puked a transmission on my watch, I did replace one of my 180's transmissions tho. Swapped with a used trans I had from a parts 180 as soon as I acquired it. Took about 20 minutes and it's been plowing, towing and mowing ever since.

The yard cart should be fine but I wouldn't risk a roller or blade. Especially if your units still running the 25 year old factory grease.

I have a yard cart and its ok, but there are issues. If you try and pull it with the bagger on the bagger is in the way. They don't hold squat for grass. Maybe 3 sets of bag dumps and its full so its not very useful for that. But good for hauling around general yard debris and landscaping tools and materials.

You could get hubcaps! I hear they're all the rage.:dunno:

The coolest thing I've got for my 170 was the high lift blades. They keep the bagger chute from clogging so much, but they suck up gravel off the driveway.

If you would, take a look at my thread and tell me if you have the beefed up versions or the weaker ones, or both. Would be interested to hear other guys experiences.

Not sure if you asking me (OP) or the other poster (who already answered), but I have the older original 180. It's a '89 or '90 model, I haven't checked the engine code yet to see which year.
I was asking about yours scotty, thanks, was curious :fing32:.
