Is there suppose to something that stops the variable speed pulley from turning when the clutch is depressed and in neutral. If I start mine and try to put it gear it grinds so bad that I have to stop the engine shift it into a gear and hold in the clutch and start the engine. Once in gear I can shift with out grinding.

Depressing the clutch is supposed to stop the belt which applies drag to the rear variable pulley. Wear or mis adjustment is usually the culprit. Try the variable lever in the rearward "slow" position and it may work....
