Just came in from the shed and still puzzeled. Installed a new ignition switch and a new battery cable to ground and still NO START. No Headlights , No movement on Alternator Gauge, no click at Starter solinoid. The ignition switch is a briggs and straton replacement part #2178280. Need a wiring diagram to go further if anyone has one !!

Went to auto zone and got a new buss circuit breaker 12 volt , 20 amp. Cleaned the female contacts with contact cleaner on the wire harness connector to the back of the new ignition switch. Replaced the black battery cable to ground. STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUE NO CHANGE AT ALL!! The only thing I havent changed is the interlock switch on the transmission. Don't have a clue of how to get to it to change it. I did buy one with the ignition switch.

The question still is do you have power at the "B" post on the ignition switch? The interlocks are after the ignition switch and only effect the starter circuit. The lights should work regardless as they are on a separate circuit. You can spend a fortune going about the tractor changing parts. If you have no power to the "b" terminal there will be no power to the ignition, accessory or light circuit and the break is somewhere between the battery and the switch.
The transmission interlock, if you still have one, is under the seat pan on the top of the transmission. If it is there and you think it is bad you can jump the switch with a short piece of wire to see if it makes a difference.

WAIT A MINUTE! What engine do you have in your tractor? If it is a Kohler K301 or any engine with the battery ignition 2178280 is the wrong switch. The plug might match up but the circuits in the switch will not match the wiring harness.

Switch on left is for Briggs engine in 7013S and switch on right out of AC 916 with Kohler engine.

.

As you can see the poles are different. I don't think putting the Briggs "magneto" switch in a tractor with a Kohler engine will hurt anything but putting the Kohler "battery" switch in a tractor with a Briggs engine will blow out the magneto by supplying power to the magneto.

If you are referencing manuals on the simplicity site you have to be careful about information concerning the wiring harness and engine as the information may not be interchangeable between the two brands especially if the power plants are different. If I try to Pull up a manual for your tractor I get the manuals for the Simplicity tractor.

YOU HAVE THE WRONG IGNITION SWITCH. The switch you have is for a Simplicity tractor with Briggs engine. When you turn the key to start you are entergizing the coil and the starter never get any power because the "M" post is nothing but a ground when you turn the key off. Change to the right switch before you go looking to replace more parts. I believe the switch you need is 1665259. Briggs sells them for $35 but you can find one at an autoparts store for under ten bucks. Just match it to your original switch. If it has an "m" post it is not for your tractor.

I bought the first switch from a Simplicity dealer in Lima, New York about 35 miles from Rochester,New york where I live. I gave him the Id number of 1690075 and Model on the side of the hood 712S. He never asked about which engine I had . What number switch do I ask him to order for me. Is telling him that it has a 12 horsepower kohler engine enough to get the right ignition switch. Thank you for all your time and help you have given me with this issue. I just reread your last post and I see that you did give me number 1665259 for the right switch to order THANKS,

Read my post above I added the info you needed. The dealer screwed up. Because when he put in your model number he gets the parts list for 1690232 (a Simplicity with Briggs engine). Apparently he does not know the difference. Take your original switch with you to show the difference.

I am sorry but I am having a great deal of difficulty posting tonight. The dealer screwed up because when he types in your model number Briggs cant find and instead sends him to the briggs model 1690232. I added the info you needed to my last post above. I believe you need 1665259. Take your original switch with you to show him the difference as the dealer may not know that there is a difference. He should correct his/Briggs error at no added charge to you.

Thanks for all the help finnaly got it running. Traced every line back to the switch and cleaned each and every contact and made sure every connection was tight and checked each line for conductivity. Put it back together and it started first try. Must have been a loose or dirty connection on one of the wires. Thanks again for the help.

That is interesting. Do you have photos of your setup? I am glad you got it running but am intrigued with how the Kohler runs on that switch unless it's a Kohler with a magneto (which would not be an original engine).
