I am wiring another 990 from scratch and best I can tell is its an early 80's model. I have noticed when you remove all the safety switches from the schematic there is still quite a difference year to year in how these machines are wired, any one else notice the same thing? I'm talking the 990's with an alternator and small flywheel starter. I'm using a schematic from 1983-84 models.

I also notice the there is variation in the starter/gen models as well.

Any thoughts?

I don't see a tremendous difference in the early models, Scott.

The one thing that bugs me is in how the regulator is wired in the starter generator models. In th cub setups, which is basically the same, the L terminal of the regulator is used to supply power to the lights, etc. On the 990 it is unused.

When I rewired my first completed 990(with starter/gen) I noticed there were differences in the schematics in the exact area you brought up, the head lamp harness. I dont have those schematics in front of me, but will see if I can dig them up.
