Well, I finally got the photo's of this beast......and mowed my yard with it, too!

The verdict isn't nearly as bad as the PO made it out to be.

His description: Engine leaks oil .... TRUE
Throttle is sticking ...TRUE
Starter doesn't want to turn over engine...FALSE
Hydrostat Auto Drive won't pull hills.......FALSE

His assumption: Only good for parts! Gave it to me if I could use any parts from it.

MY Assessment:

The starter wasn't turning over the engine because the connections on the battery were slightly loose.

The Auto Drive works quite well, makes very little noise, and is climbing hills without any problems. I was cutting some 12" tall weeds on a fairly steep hillside by my house. The only thing that it did was bog down on the amount of weeds, and I just eased back on the speed of the drive, and the blades caught up and it was still climbing the hill.

Other noticed items he didn't mention or know about.

This has what I initially thought was a 52" deck, because of the routing of the belts. This looks like the same belt set up as the 52" Green Machine I just sold. Has a long 5/8" tractor to deck belt driving the left and the middle stack pulley which has a short 1/2" belt from middle to right pulley. The big belt is frayed severely, and the short belt to drive the right blade is broken and gone. But I cut my entire yard with the left and middle blades. Even without the full complement of blades it was cutting grass very well, and the deck spindles sound quiet and the blades in action were blowing grass well outward of the shute.

It has good brakes, and the engine is tight internally, the carb needs a rebuild, as it tended to surge when not under a load, and needed a slight choke action to smooth it out. Once under load, no choke was needed.

The hood and body/seat pan has had some poorly done repaint work, and the left side hood decal is missing. The right side decal is in poor condition. I may be trying to come up with a decal like Mistavp05-David did on his Wide Body.

At this point, I'm considering keeping this one. Yea, I know, I've said that about almost every one of these I've gotten, but I like the Wide Body stance on the hill side I have to deal with. This one isn't in real bad condition over all, and I like the strong response of the Auto Drive, on this one. I'll probably sell my 95 Murray 12hp40" is a good mower, and I should be able to get an easy $350 for it. At some point I'll repaint this Wide Body. I may try to get some paint matched at the auto paint store for the Metallic Candy Apple Red and see if I can do a good job of a match on the original color.

And this is the way it looked after I got done mowing grass (dirt, it looks more like) but it didn't seem to be breathing hard after it got done on my torture test yard.

Looks promising. It appears that someone added 2 extra gauge wheels to that 46" deck.

Yea, Huffy, that is why I thought it was a 52" It looks identical in every way as the 52" had on Green Machine. I'm going to measure it at some point, but probably won't bother with it till next weekend. Since I'm working nights now, it is more important to go to bed when I get home.

Autrodrive + larger deck + Widebody + red color = the perfect Murray..

Nice score Hankll! If you, or anyone else for that matter, needs the super large, high resolution picture files that I sent away when i had my decals made, please, let me know. I'll log onto my old PC and post links to them.

I may also be able to work on separate designs, colors, etc.

I would love links. I need to do something with my hood decals. I was trying to come up with something similar but my graphics are a way to low resolution.

Good eye. That's the first thing I noticed being a new 1999 owner was the 4 wheels.

46" is the largest deck put on the Widebody LT's. Very nice machine!

I won't deny that I thought it was a 52" simply because it has the belts routing like the 52". I was under the impression the belts was in a different serpentine route on a 46" than a 52". As in, not having a stacked pulley, with a separate belt to the right side pulley. The 4 deck wheels are a ? mark, too. It looks factory on the wheel mounting points.

I will have to clean this beast up and try to get the scoop on the oil leak. It was nearly out of oil when I got done mowing with it. The throttle cable shouldn't be a problem, and neither should the carb rebuild. It is so minor on the surging, it might clean up with some SeaFoam or other carb cleaner.

I heard from the PO this afternoon. He is happy with the 2004 Murray he bought from me except the right side spindle was slipping on the belt. I told him if he'd bring it back to me and buy the belt, I'd put the new belt on it. I didn't replace the belt. It didn't look worn. I guess looks were deceiving. He was cool with that. I guess since he gave me his old Murray, I should spring for a belt...........it is the right thing to do........right? I didn't offer a warranty, more of what you see is what you get, but for a potential increase in revenue by selling my 95, I guess I could afford the belt. Just don't want that to become a habit.....there is no profit in that kind of stuff...

By the way, BBY.....the model number is 46573x92.....I forgot to mention that....I see that yours is a 99 20hp46" manual shift.

I was scrutinizing your photo's, and it looks like yours has the same serpintine belt configuration. I detect the main engine to left spindle and middle is like mine? I just don't have that belt guard on mine. But it looks like yours is the same except for the 4 deck wheels. So that means mine probably is a 46" and not a 52".

My belt routing is below. Speaking of the belt guard, I was poking around partstree.com for my machine, and they want $133 and change for that cover.

Well it is made out of some heavy steel if it is like the one that was on the Green machine. It looks like at least 3/32" thick. I had to create an extension for that one , and I believe, the reason I had to do that, was because the one I had was for the 46" ........ I'll probably get into my creative mode and fabricate one when I get some of the other issues fixed. I might check the junk yard and see if he has one. I'm thinking I might be able to take a mower deck and do some cutting and welding and come up with one that is a reasonable facsimile of the original for a lot less than $133. It'll need a heavy steel one as that big belt would chew up a thin metal cover.

Oh, the routing of those belts is like mine. I can't explain the 4 deck wheels vs. yours only having 2, though.

That steel is thick for sure. When I first broke down the deck for painting I was surprised how heavy it was. The one thing I'm slightly concerned with the belts is how close the "Idler" pully is to the mandrel pulley, about 1/2". Everything is correct and I double triple and quadruple checked the belt size. It's basically how it was before but I figured the old cracked trashed belt was a stretched a little more than it was.

Yea, I kinda was checking that out on the 52" deck for the Green Machine. I had to buy a new belt for that mandrel to the stack pulley also. It never touched and was operating smoothly after it ran for awhile and warmed up. It bounced the idler pulley a little when it was first running. The one I got wasn't Kevlar wrapped, which to me wasn't the correct belt, but I got it from the main Mower supply house in Nashville. So it wasn't like I went to Napa and that was what they gave me. I believe the one I got was from Sten's, though, it is the major supply house that these mower shops use for a lot of after market parts.

It looks like I've got the same one. Well, except the body is green.....and the 17.5 hp motor is a Tecumseh instead of B&S. Unfortunately, the Murray ID tag had faded into a blank by the time it was "gifted" to me. Have been trying to identify it ever since. Nine years. And yes, it just keeps rolling along.
