So Sat I was brush hogging 5 acres and got down to the last 5 yards and it died. Like i turned off the ignition.
Took the plug and no spark. Well I broke my voltage regulator/ballast resister(accedent). So I replaced that. Anyways Ck the points and condenser and visibly it looks fine and fairly new. I checked the coil for resistance and it specks out with a new one.
So I'm guessing it is a condenser but I'm not sure what the specs. should be on it. As far as checking the capacitance. But I thought it was wierd that it just cut off like I just turned it off. no bogging missing hesitation rough running nothing it was working great all day and then BAMM nothing.

p.s. It does have the 12V conversion

Bypass the ignition switch or "Hot wire" it.

Yep bypass the ignition switch and if that don't do it then hotwire directly to the coil, if it starts then you know it is a wiring problem.

yeah I by passed it and it fired right up!!! This one stupid little wire caused me sooo much trouble.

Well this wire went from the ignition switch to the ammeter. So when I tried to take out the screw in the switch....(I'm sure you can quess) yep the screw broke off inside so now I need a new switch. Well now I'm just going to rewire the whole thing. And since I have a new proof meter/ tach. and a new oil guage mine as well get a new ammeter since I'm redoing the wiring anyways. So I may be posting again here shortly LOL.

It also isn't charging and I just put a new alt. on about 2 month ago.

Ac Delco remy It has a lifetime warranty but since I was having wireing issues I thought maybe it's the wiring and not the alt. The alt that fit mine was from a '71 buick grand sport 455 big block. I think it was 55amps or something. Not to sure what an exciter is.

if it's a gm 3 wire job, it needs the charge wirte, the #1 and #2 hooked up.

#2 jumped tot he chrage stud, and #1 thru a diode or a 194 marker lamp to the 'coil' side of the ignition switch.. once you get over 400 rpm, it should turn on and charge.

also.. if the screw broke off on that switch.. might have been a bad switch and not the wire.. IE.. bad contact.

cheap enough to replace both though.

Yeah thanks soundguy. I'm just going with a lifetime warranty internal voltage regulater alternator and doing away with the extra wires all together. I spent so much time running around form one parts store to the next tring to get them to 1) test and make sure its a bad alt.( which the place I have the warranty through said it was good) but I took it to another parts place and they said it was only pushing out 10Volts being bad. So I told them I want to just switch it out.....well they didn't have it there so I drove another 5 miles to the other store and the guy there tested the alt and he said it was good too. He then suggested I go with an internal regulator and do away with the extra wires. Well he did have that alt. and it was at the store I just came from. So back to that store they had the alt. there but it was only a 1yr warranty and the life time one was at the other store I had just come from....... So I let them have it. I have had enough. I told them to have that alt here tomorrow and I will pick it up tomorrow @ 5:30pm ARGHHHH I'm getting ****** just talking about this again. LOL

I'm buying a new switch from Stevens Ag Parts/stevenstractors.com They have great prices and seem to be a Christian based business.
