Hi everyone,
New here looking for help. I have a 1951 8n. Recently rebuilt starter with new solonoid. Put all back together and when I engage starter switch I get nothing. Battery is charged. Feels like cable from battery to solonoid jumps.
Then the battery cable to solonoid (and ) cable from solonoid to starter get hot. Had to pull cable off of battery to cool off. I get no rotation during any of this. Any suggestions?

I'll see about finding a moderator of this forum that can move this to the appropriate forum (9N/2N/8N, under 'The Big Boys') for you.

I just experienced a similar problem with my 8N. I replaced the starter. I had tried replacing the brushes, but... I had some bad windings. With the old (original) bendix... it turned enough to start the tractor... until the return spring broke on that bendix. There just wasn't enough oomph in the old starter to turn that new, high-speed, bendix.

Sorry about that...

You could probably get it rebuilt, too... with the same results. Don't know what it would cost for that, though...

did yuo make sure you got the correct solenoid.. should be the 3 prong type that grounds with the thumb switch, and small prong toward the block.

is solenoid shorted?

with bat hooke dup to one side, is there power on the other ( leave starter strap off.

if no, then good.

if yes.. solenoid is shorted.

now.. ground the small prong.. power should show up on the starter side.. if yes. then likely good.

is motor locked up.. or hydro locked? can you bar her over with a large screwdriver thru starter hole.. if locked up.. pull plugs to see if cyl's full of water or gas....

"..Recently rebuilt starter with new solonoid..."

Did you paint the starter when you rebuilt it? If so - pull it back off and sand the mating surface on both the starter and block where the starter mounts to ensure good metal to metal contact. This is a major electrical connection for not only the starter but the entire electrical system.

Thanks everyone,
Just had time today to try out all of your help. Is 6v pos ground and all is correct. SouNdguy tried all your help and solonoid appears ok. No hydro lock.
Today had meter on starter side of solonoid. Started with about 7v. When I hit strt switch solonoid sort of clicks as if battery is low. 6volts to strter side of solonoid. THEN when i release strt switch power stays on starter side of
solonoid. I pull of neg batt cable and it is sparking as i do it. Do you think start switch is faulty? Thanks Aubreydad
