John Deere, MTD and Husqvarna make most all of the consumer grade box store mowers.

MTD made a few models of Craftsman, but there were mostly Electrolux/AYP/Husqvarna. John Deere made its own along with Scotts mowers.

You can go to their websites and see all the various brands.

First off, I do landscaping on the side in the summer (15 so can't exactly get a job yet)

I own 6 Craftsman that look identical to this except the old green-ish color. Around 1998-2004?
Wait a minute. You're 15, and you already own 6 Craftsman? And the title of your thread is "help me decide". Shouldn't that be "help my customer decide"?

Well, I had a little Weedeater 13.5 HP, 38" deck and a 6 speed. It was made by Electrolux (now Husqvarna) and its part number of HD13538 crosses exactly to a Poulan of the same dimensions.

It was a decent little mower. Did the job of mowing my flat lot well.

In my opinion, I believe the Poulans are a cheaper version of the Craftsman and Husqvarna tractors. They may start with the same chassis, but the Poulans look like they have cheaper parts on them. I don't know this for sure, but that's what they look like.

^ They're basically the same. Husqvarna makes tractors under the Poulan, Ariens, Craftsman names. Sad thing is, Ariens used to mean some serious quality equipment, then they got out of the tractor business and sold rights to Husqvarna to make tractors using their names. My old 1984 Ariens HT 16 GT would put these new HD "Ariens" tractors to complete shame.

This is probably about the best tractor you can get for a grand. Actually 1050.If your local store has one. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...ctors&sName=Lawn+Tractors+(less+than+2+acres)

Forgot to say it is a lt2000
Ths model goes on sale once in a while. You can also join the Craftsman club and get it for 10%off. I think it will be the best mower for the price. You can get a YS4500 manual with a 42 inch deck for $1300 pluss tax. It is a much better mower. I think mine is great an I have 3 JD's to back it up. If the yard is small go with the 1000 series if it is large go with the cheapest 4500 series. Better yet sell him one of yours and make some money. I know he wanted new. I read the post. I never buy new anything. My hat is off to you. You are going to go places in life. Hard work gets you there every time. The best to you in your adventures
