T = twin S = single B = briggs engine Usually if you look hard enough at the tractor's engine you can figure it out. I also think they kept changing it from year to year. What I can't figure out is why some of the tractors with the 16.5 hp Onan engines were 816 and some were 817, with the same engine. I don't know what the G stood for but they all seem to have hoods that open and no hole for the Gas cap. Hope this helps. Ed

GRAVELY 8163-B had B&S single 16, however so does 8163-G, but 8122-G, 8123-G, 8179-G & 8199-G are Kohler. 816S is a B&S.

8162-T, 8163-T & 8183-T have Twin Onans, as did 816T & 818T.

The 1st Professional: 12-G, 16-G, 18-G & 20-G were all Kohler. KT equates to Kohler Twin.

One of my too many toys is a Kohler single-powerd Professional 12-G with 50" mowing deck. While the Kohler powers it well enough for normal uses, I've sometimes abused it by trying to mow one of my large open areas at my 11 acre home when the plants had grown too tall. It's mowing speed was absolutely limited by available horsepower. I've toyed with the idea of fitting one of my extra 3-cylinder Kubota or Mitsubishi engines to it. I have both. So does anyone know if G-12's internal transmission parts are as strong as the higher-model-number G-series tractors? And if so, has anyone swapped one of these great little 3-cylinder diesels onto a G-series Gravely? I know I'd have to make a protected rear extension, but I like diesels. If I don't do that, it's going to get one of these automotive-sized mufflers someday. I don't like its BARK.

Beny, The things to remember with the 4 wheel gravely tractors. The 400 series are based on the 2 wheel tractors(like a 5665), if you open the hood and look at it you can see where the handles would go they bolted on the frame and then added a front end. They were not bad tractors but are not as nice as the later ones and are priced acordingly. As far as I've seen the 800 and 8000 series tractors are almost identical but the 8000 series tractor has more safetys built in, in a panic stop when you hit the brake it kicks itself out of gear (the 800 and 400 series tractors won't stop no matter what if you don't move the handle). The G series tractors don't have the lever they have foot pedals and look like it would be similar to driving a car with a gas and brake pedal, but I've never driven one. The G's comand a much higher price so I'm assumeing that they are quite nice to operate. As far a enginge size goes, I have one with a 12 horse Kohler and am very happy with it, but there is no substitute for horse power. When I need to repower it I'm sure I'll be looking for something like a 20 horse Honda. The other big thing to remember is that there are 4 wheel tractors that say gravely on them that were made by Ariens and are not in the same class as the rear engine riders listed above. They are not bad tractors but you don't want to spend too much on one thinking you are getting a great deal on your first gravely. This is not meant to be the difinitive history of gravely and I'm sure somebody will point out a detail or two I have wrong. It was just meant to help you on your hunt for your first Gravely. Good Luck, Ed
