??? 80'S era 2418 mule drive ???

10817 Views 38 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  PK53097
I see pics of the two spring mule drives but not the single spring. Does anyone have any pics of this type?
From the included exploded diagram I know mine is not right (that coupled with the fact that it keeps throwing the belt). I just want to see what needs to be fixed.

I think what you are seeing in that diagram is two views of the same hitch and I think it's the mule drive for the parallel hitch. One is shown together and one apart with the items called out. Do you have the parallel hitch set up? If your deck lifts the same in the front as it does in the back, that's what you have. If your deck only lifts in the back, then you don't and you need the mule drive that I have. I have some pictures somewhere of my mule drive. I'll see if I can find them.
I don't know if you can tell anything from these pics or not but this is the mule drive I have on my 83 2414. I thought I took some pictures of it when it was off for someone but I can't find them.

Parallel Hitch, what fool would designed such a compliated set up, has more parts that the Space Shuttle. I wish I could see one in detail so that I could figure out what they are suppose to do. I understand they were to raise the mower parrallel to the ground so that you could cut grass at different heights, but this set up is unreal. I wish I could see one so that I could figure out what it suppose to do and how it suppose to do it. I have talked to the parts people and all they tell me is to stay away from the parallel hitch. All they do is fax me the same parts break down that PK 53097 has and they tell me to order the parts I need and they don't have all the parts. They can't even tell me what belt it suppose to use, shows 3 different belts, they said to pick one....They can't even explain how it suppose to work.

Can you convert a parrallel hitch to the hitch you show in your pictures?

PARRALLEL HITCH, what a piece of ****

I assume you can but I have never owned a parallel hitch. You have to figure that, as long as you get another mule drive and whatever other parts you need (shouldn't be many) the conversion should be rather simple.
I have the parrallel hitch on my 2418 (although it differs from the diagram above?) and once I figured it out its been great, The remeoval and reatachment are faster than any tractor I've had. I"ve never seen the standard setup on a PK but hearing that only the back of the deck lifts sounds like bad news.
Username, Mine is different from yours. The third point of connection (by the rollers) is like the diagram PK53 posted. Are the 2 front arms suppose to hing in the middle? Can you PLEASE post more pictures of both sides where it mounts to the front of the chassie and also the belt drive part where the 2 idlers are? More pictures the better.

THANK YOU

BUD
Jas11964,
the photos of yours is the two spring type I see on most PK's. The one I have is the single spring type shown in the exploded diagram. The diagram is showing the hitch in the assembled and exploded views and it is showing two pully support brackes. I only have one with pullys mounted on both sides. That why I know mine is set up wrong.

Dirtybug,
Can you sent a lot of pics of yours??

Usename,
Your is that same kind I have. I sure mine has been modified. Can you send more pics of yours from different views so I can see most of the parts and the attachment.

Budsvtx,
Don't fret. I will get mine back original and will provide detailed assembly instructions and photos.

I'm off the put PB Blaster on all the parts and take some photos of what I have and how it is attached and will post them tonight.

Here's the last ones.
As you can see in the second set of pics, the pullys are not standard and have been added to the left pully bracket and the right bracket is missing.

I've been looking at diagrams and pictures of mule drives for poer kings for weeks now, although, had never seen one in person. Not too many people seem all knowing in this area. I am just finishing up hooking up my mower deck on an older '72 frame. I converted to an electric clutch (flywheel holes are different). Also, fabricating the front frame forks to mount the mule too (really easy piece to make) and then hanging the two spring style mule drive too them. Thats how I decided to skin that cat.. I like the looks of the parallel mount because it gets the front of the deck way up as well, but, one step ata time for me!
If it is raining this weekend, I may go up to Taylor to the Tractor Barn to see if Jerry Frank has a complete mule like mine. Only about 5 or 6 hours drive. Just a short drive for a Texan.
You know I have that mule drive. It came with my 80 PK, it looked a little complicated and never tried to hook it up. When I got my 75 PK it had the other mule drive. To me it is much easier to hook up. You can change one to the other without any problem.

Username, Thank you for posting the pictures, they show me alot. Looks like I have some parts missing.

Rangerman, Have you made the conversion or have seen one that was changed?

Thanks BUD
Yes, I have made the change. I have both decks, the one I done extensive repair to and the other was a newer deck. So I thought I'd use up the repaired deck and reserve the newer one. However the rebuilt deck still in need so I went back to the newer deck.
Here's the drive off the tractor. As you can see, both the pulley brackets and pulleys have been replaced with that thing in the second photo #2117. If anyone has pics of the pulley brackets and pulleys on a drive like this, please post them.
