Alright, so my tractor stopped running, I check the points, got nothing. Check the condenser, no issues. Tested the magneto coil, and there it is. The high voltage side opened up. The core for the coil can be taken apart easily, so does anyone know if a substitute can be made to fit? The core is 1/2" square. I already tried a B & S coil, an Evinrude coil, and I'm approaching the end of my rope. Solid state switchover is not an option for me, nor is battery ignition. Any ideas/ suggestions would be appreciated.

Is it a Tecumseh??...if so one from a smaller HP Tecumseh might slide over the core, the type that hides under the flywheel.like push mowers and H series under 8 HP have....

I dont know off hand how big the square hole in the core of the coil is,sorry..probably about 1/2" I'd guess..old Clintons and a few others with Wico mags used the same coil too...

Yes, it is a Tecumseh. I got an under the flywheel coil from a 5 hp, but it is too small. If this coil was similar to several engines, then it would be quite common, then?

Can you post a pic of the coil and the dimensions like the outer diameter how high and the center hole size, what HP Tecumseh, I may have an oil coil laying around.

I think Kbeitz posted awhile back that you can alter the laminations to fit a different coil on and it wont affect the operation of it??..maybe you could remove a few layers and rivet them back together?..

You could go to a car coil too,if it has a battery...

The coil's core is a .5" square, the coil is 1.44" long, with a diameter of 1.695", not including the spark wire bulge. The wire stands out .4" from the rest of the coil. I can (and did) drill out the rivets and remove two laminations, but unless I file it down, the core is still going to be .5" tall. The engine it came off is a Tecumseh HH120, model 143-572062, serial 7018-12082.

I think all the Tecumsehs with the coil under the flywheel on the lower HP engines up to about 8 HP are the same...

The one you need is a rare beast now, only a few years of the HH120 came with points,It wont be easy to find a new one if its even possible now,and I dont see any listed in my old 1995 Rotary parts catalog, there is a few other coils that mount like that they do list,is one off a Briggs model 9,14,and 23 ,but they only show a picture of it,no dimentions--another one that looks like yours goes on a Kohler, but it might be different too--the Kohler number is all they give ,no HP or engine model numbers, its Kohler 220435..

I would just get a used car coil,a ballast resistor if it required one,and a toggle switch,it wont take you long to hook it up and make that run it,provided the tractor has a battery...then your coil worries will be over for good, and if it ever needs another one any parts store or junkyard can supply it..

Hi McFail, I checked the coils I have and they are the small ones, if you can't find the right coil, you could convert to battery ignition using a small rechargeable battery and charging it every week or so with a trickle charger, I have a couple of these I use in the shop all the time must be 5 to 7 yrs old and still working good.

here's another supplier

or a motorcycle battery would work.
