So, the old LI has been sitting out under the porch while we tinker with it and try to get it going. Yesterday the neighbor stops by and asks if want another one.

Another one? They multiply??? :sidelaugh

We go over to his barn and there is an old 5665, circa 1990? I'd guess. It started right up, but I have two questions -

First, when you pull the PTO lever it engages with a bit of a grind and clunk. He has both the gear select and the forward -reverse levers in neutral and it still doesn't sound real smooth.

Second, the PTO engages and runs normally when there is no real load, but when you attach the 50" deck and try to cut high grass the PTO slows or even stops. Is that likely a misadjusted slip clutch?

His father left him the machine and deck, as well as a chipper, dump-cart, and a snowblower, but he hasn't used them. He's willing to trade me the equipment for some 3 point attachments I have been looking to get rid of, and some old Corvair parts I have had for years, but I just started with these machines and I'm not sure I want to do it.

Any thoughts would be welcome!

The PTO clutch goes in gear rough it is a dog type clutch...give it a real fast jerk. If the machine doesn't stall it could be the slip clutch or belt. If it is getting rid of stuff you don't want for something you do go for it! Here is a link for manuals.

THANK YOU, Kyyada. It does NOT stall at all. In fact, I could not get it to smoke or even sputter even though it has sat for "ages" according to him.

I think he wants the fairly rare hub caps I saved from my Corvair Monza. I guess they are worth maybe $300. The rest of the stuff maybe $300 (If I could sell it all)...

So I will talk to him in the morning and see if this works out.

I have looked at 2 wheelers all summer, $600 is a good price for what you are getting, especially considering that $300 of what you have is an iffy sell.

I bought this one with just a blade for $250ish a couple weeks ago.

It has been a fun project.

Remember to pull back on the fwd-rev handle ever so slightly - until just before the tractor starts to actually back up - when engaging the PTO. Part of the problem may be the assembly hasn't been used in years. And your model year is probably closer to 85-86, depending on the serial #. The 5000 series was gone by '90, replaced with the Professional line.

I agree with the PTO engagement. Just yank on the handle to engage. There is no mesh at all it's simmilar to shifting your car into 1st gear without a clutch. This is why it's recommended to be done at idle.

As far as your 50" deck slipping I would guess its the slip clutch slipping, or possibly your belts on the deck are loose. I have a similar issue with my snow blower. Even after adjustment the clutch begins to slip in about 4" of snow. I think it's just slipped so many times its just worn and extra slippery. I'm not sure if that is really the case, but I'll be I disassembling it next week or so and reface the metal surfaces on my lathe and replace the fiber washer.
