5020h 2000 hydro eliminator axle seals

I just purchased a 5020h 2000 hydro eliminator with and am now giving it the once over. I noticed one of the axle seals is leaking so I searched the archives and read several good posts. I still have a couple of questions.

1. I noticed people using a puller to get the hub off. How is the hub held on? Is it on a tapered shaft? What keeps the hub from spinning on the axle shaft?

2. How do I put the hub back on? Do I just tap it with a hammer?

3. Since the Bolens seal number 1185301 is nla does anyone have a replacement number from somewhere else?

TIA,
BWSwede

Thanks Bosmech,

I have that book but have found the number for the seals shown in it are nla. I was hoping someone has a part number from another company that will work in its place.

Hoodlatch,

That's a great tool, thanks.

Does anyone have any insight on my other questions regarding pulling the hub?

Thanks again,

I looked at the second link and all I see is a nut. So take the tire and wheel off and sit it to one side. Take the nutt & washer off and do the same with it. Tap on the hub with a hammer, if it don't move put a puller on it. If you got the puller really tight and nothing still isn't moving hit the end of the puller bolt really hard with a large hammer. It shold pop right off. Just a walk in the park.

Thats how I did it. Snugged up the puller fairly tight, then a good square hit with the hammer.

Thanks guys! With your advice it seems straightforward enough that maybe even I could take this on.

With the help of a puller I got the hub off. Now I am having a problem getting the oil seal out. There is nothing to grab onto to pull it out.

Any suggestions?

OK it junk, so drive a screwdriver into it and pry it out or turn a sheetmetal screw into it oppsite each other and then take two pairs of pliers and pull and wiggle at the same time.
Thanks Deerlope.

I replaced my axle seal using the forum suggestions to guide me. I got it all back together and took it for a drive around the yard today and found that it still leaks.

I can't figure out what I could have done wrong as all the steps were pretty straightforward.

Any ideas or suggestions on what to look for?

When you had it apart with the seal out did you check the axle for sideplay? If the bearing is loose the seal won't hold.

Mike
Also, make sure the axle doesn't have a slight groove worn into the shaft where the seal rides. If so, you may be able to sleeve it.
Thanks guys. Although I didn't see a groove in the shaft, I did have corrosion that I lightly sanded with 300 and 600 grit cloth. Do you think the corrosion could cause it to leak? Would a speedy sleeve bridge and seal any pitting on the shaft?

I just can't think it is the bearing. The machine only has 270 hours on it, and it was only used to rototill. By the way, if it is the bearing, how would I get the bearing out of the axle tube? With the axle shaft going through it there is nothing to grab onto.

Thanks again,
