I'm working on disassembling the 50 snow thrower that I traded for a 56 blade for my 400. It is in perfect mechanical shape but needs some paint. I'm stuck at trying to remove the auger and driveshaft which end does it come out from the chain side or right side? My favorite find so far was a grade 8 1/4-20 as the shear bolt doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?!? O well hoses are in great shape and the cylinders don't leak.

Here it is before I bought it. From what I have read it is close to a 46 but was the one built specifically for the 400 and the 46 came later with the 420 and 430 and could be adapted to the 400. I haven't taken any other pictures of it yet.

Just looks like a big #38 I undid the bolts on the end and shear bolt if it has one and had to pound with a sledgehammer. BUT it isn't the same so I would wait for the correct procedure. did you find it in JD Parts for the blow-up ??

mrbacklash or PA318Guy,

I bought a JD 400 + a #50 snowthrower last fall, and am absolutely amazed how well they work!

However, the hydraulic chute was not working initially, so I needed to re-cable it...but had the darndest time trying to figure out how to run the cables. I ended up with about 45° of movement, but it seems like there should be more rotation available -- if I knew what I was doing! :dunno:

Would either of you happen to have a diagram of how to run the cable? Or, could I please ask a favor of mrbacklash: would you be able to pop the cover off of yours, and take a pic for me?

I really appreciate it!

Actually I think that is what Mother Deere recommends for the shear bolt is Grade 8 1/4x20 bolts. Where a lower grade bolt will just bend and stretch a Number 8 bolt will shear clean. with a side impact when the blower hangs up on a newspaper or some other foreign objects...................KJD
