I'm glad I can turn to a lot of very guy n gals with knowledge about John Deere garden tractors . If I install a rear PTO kit on my 445 , will I be able to use a category 1 tiller or will the Deere PTO only accept John Deeres cat 0 tiller? I haven't got a 3pt hitch yet so this will hopefully direct me to the cat 1 3point as well. I am looking at a PTO kit and I would prefer the Cat 1 3point. Or would I be better installing the rear hydro kit ? The tiller is the main attachment I am planning on using for the rear . My brother has a Cat 1 tiller I can use with the PTO drive I can use . But I don't know what all will be compatible .

Looks like the 455 spins a standard 540 RPM rear PTO. You will be able to run your bro's tiller.
What I have done with my 3 point stuff is to get new pins to fit a Cat0 and then you will need to swap them over for your tractor. On some attachments you can put the pins on facing each other instead of the normal outtie direction. The threaded part of the pin may be smaller than the Cat1 but as long as you keep an eye on them it won't matter. Just make sure they are FT (Really Tight). You will only damage the pins if you happen to get carried away tightening them and no damage to anything else. I haven't been able to even using a 2 1/2 foot long breaker bar.
Before you hook up the PTO shaft make sure the shaft length is good or it WILL smash your PTO and maybe more. Install the tiller, set the top link, and block up the rear of the tractor and measure the length when down as far as the tiller can go to make sure the shaft will not come apart while running. Then lift the tiller as high as it can go and measure the distance. This is the one that will cause the most damage. Make sure there is enough room for the shaft. Princess Auto and UFA (up here) have a ton of pins, bushings and spacers available to adapt the pins to the right size once you are sure that is what you want to do.
This is the reason why I own most of my own attachments. It is quite easy to get this wrong and your kids / grandkids / wife / neighbors / etc will learn a whole new bunch of words if you get it wrong.

The PTO and the lift are separate, meaning the PTO is a standard 540 rpm, and will have a standard spline stub for 540 rpm implements. The lift can be Cat 0 or Cat 1, the difference being the size of the hitch pins on the implement, and the size of the hole in the respective hitch balls. Go with a Cat 1 lift if you can, because you can put sleeves on Cat 0 pins and use Cat 0 implements on a cat 1 hitch, but not the other way around. The 445 should be able to handle the same size implements the X4xx,X5xx and X7xx can. At 22 engine hp. you'll have about 15-16 PTO horsepower, which should give you enough to operate a 48" or so rototiller.

As tight to the tractor (short lift arms) as the implement will be, you'll likely have to shorten the supplied drive shaft of whatever tiller you get. You also want to add a slip clutch at best, or a shear pin at least, in the driveline.

What tractor and tiller does your brother have? John Deere? Model number etc. Helps members giving you advice to determine compatibility. Rear pto kit doesn't care if its Cat 0 or Cat 1, the 3 point kit determines 0 or 1.

Get Ruegg Cat 1.

Well , first , I KNOW the PTO assembly and 3pt hitch are 2 completely different assemblies . My brother has a John Deere 1025 tractor and a Cat 1 tiller he bought from Tractor Supply . I have a 445 and I found a John Deere PTO assembly that came off a 445 . I had planned on purchasing a Ruegg Cat 1 3pt hitch regardless . My big question was if I bought the PTO kit for my 445 , would the T S tiller hook up to it ? I don't know if the shaft splines vary in cat 1 and cat 0 attachments or if they are a standard size ?

This is what I meant when I said the hitch and PTO are different. 540 rpm PTO is standardized in the industry, the stub shaft on the 445 PTO will fit any 540 rpm rear implement on the market, regardless of whether it uses a Cat 0 or Cat 1 hitch.

This brings me to ask another question . Are there any advantages on using the hydraulic tiller versus the pto driven tiller ? I have decided to go with the cat 1 hitch .
Pros and cons on pto driven tiller ?

I've only owned (2) hydraulic tillers one for my 322 and now one for my 445.

Here are some - sure others will chime in.

Hydraulic:
Pro: quieter, less moving parts
Con: takes a little longer to connect up as you have to mount the pump under the tractor and run the hydraulic lines. Changing oil, filter.

PTO:
Pro: easier to connect up,
Con: louder, move moving parts -PTO shaft, PTO required.

I've been asking the same question myself. It looks like in the North East it comes down to availibility. PTO tillers are available and universal while hydraulic tillers that fit without additional money and hassle are not.

So I am guessing the hydraulic tiller has its own engage/disengage controls ?
Engage / disengage is off of the mid PTO control.

Forward reverse is handled by which side of the tiller the hydraulic motor is mounted on.
