417-8 means it is a 4-series tractor, 17HP, and an 8-speed manual transmission (3 forward, 1 reverse, hi/lo). Of course, this is how it should be if it is factory correct. (Someone correct me if I am in error)

As for electric lift for attachments (mowing deck, blade, etc), that you'll most likely have to look for if you go and see it in person. Instead of having a lift handle on the side, there should be a long switch on the dash that allows for lift and lowering of attachments.

Good luck! Sounds like a winner if the price is right.

The 417 should have the rear lift tube already installed under the fender pan on top of the transmission. The only thing that you will need is the lift cable and whatever type of hitch you want to install. Both can be had fairly easily and inexpensive.

what are the diferances in the 3 and 4 and 5 series
To the best of my knowledge (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the differences were primarily the engines used and what accessories were available (not attachments, but options, such as electric lift as an example).

For instance, the 3-series had an 8, 10, 12, and 14HP engine available. The 4-series used larger 14-18HP engines. The 5-series used 18 and up HP engines.

I don't know what else is different between the three series of tractors.
