I tried to post this earlier.... Computer must have ate my post....
OK..... So I've had this rattling around in my head a while. Now finely got it together..... So to speak....
I built a 5' yard thatch rake for my universal 3pt tool bar. It is simple enough and seems to work well enough. I plan to work on a front 3pt hitch (European style) so I can use it ahead of the mower deck....
I used JD hay baler pickups (about $1.75) and bent the last inch forward into the direction of travel. It is set up to cut about 3/4" deep and seem quite aggressive as it is now. With my rough, rocky yard it won't hurt to stir it up and help level it a little.
The white cord is a length of old cloths line cable through the springs so if one breaks, I don't find it again stuck in a tire. I had some yellow paint to use up before it turned completely solid, so thank you for not mentioning I'm the worlds worst painter..... I already know....
I like the concept, and wonder if it might have more applications than just de-thatching. It might make a good surface prep rake for final smoothing of new soil for planting lawns. It looks like the rake loads up with debris when used for de-thatching. I'd guess this reduces it's performance as it goes along (I've never de-thatched so I can't say for sure). Since it looks like it doesn't just fall out when you raise the tool, are you planning on adding some sort of grass ejector to it? Maybe a set of fingers that run horizontally and between the tines, mounted to a separate frame?

Yes..... Kinda/sorta on the pine rake concept..... And a Sears lawn rake for $5 from a garage sale......
Yes.... It does seem to clog up with material. It cleans out easily. And has me thinking as I replace springs I will not bend them. Or at least the back row anyway..... They are spaced 2 1/2" apart side to side and staggered at 2 1/2" behind one another with a 1 1/4" offset of the two rows.....
I have spread a lot of black dirt in spots. Agree it will make a good rough up tool before planting grass seed. Too hot/dry right now....
