345 - Tips to remove trans drive idler spring

Dang That thing is tight. I haven't spent much time on it, but was wondering if any of the old drum brake tools for automobiles for removing the springs will work.

How do you do it?

I Took a Brass (act.Welding Rod) 5/32" welding rod.36" long Made a Small hook on one end and a larger Handle on the other. so I could Hook the spring and Pull it . You can manouver it back on. It may test your pashance; Or what ever.. Life is good;
Clamp a large pair of vice grips on the hook end towards front of tractor and pull. It works great.
I see! I am sure I can round up something to use as a hook around my shop somewhere.

Thanks Guys,

Mike
I tied a weed eater pull rope to the hook on the spring. tied the other end of the rope to the winch on my four wheeler. had my son push the button on the winch until the spring hook was clear. I pulled down on the spring and had him to back off the winch. hope this helps
Stiff wire on the spring hook, then just grab a strap and put the wire around it.

Pull the strap from under the front of the tractor and have someone pull the spring down to clear the bar, then release.
Thanks Jimbo! Already done it twice. Old thread!!!

Used a ratchet strap and an s hook off of a tarp strap. Made it simple as pie.
Old thread, but.... I just grabbed it and pulled it off, then going back on grabbed it after hooking the rear floating hook and put it back on. I wore mechanics gloves and grabbed it ~ 1" from the hook. Just block the tractor wheels or make sure the brake is set. Maybe my spring is weak? 'Cause I know I am.

I had to replace the plastic idler pulley that was destroyed so getting it off was no problem. To get it back on I used a strap that I hooked to a winch I have. Set it in front of the front wheels and used the remote to slowly pull it to stretch it. Once it was far enough, I just pulled/pushed it into position. Release the winch and all you need to do is get that strap off. I cut mine off as it was under the spring. Much easier than trying to pull it while under the tractor.

I can do it easily on my 345 with vice grips on the hook. On the Gx345 it was an entirely different matter. I had to use a racket strap to take off and put back on. It is a much stronger spring on the GX than is on my 345 or my previous owned 285.

I do it the same way. I lay on a piece of cardboard or my creeper and put one foot against the rear tire. I grip it with both hands and just pull it forward and off. It just takes a lot of grip. The mechanics gloves is a good idea, I will have to try that next time.
