I am a fairly new JD owner with a 332. The issue I have with it is controlling the travel speed. If I am on flat ground at a normal mowing speed and then come to any incline, the tractor stops unless I push the speed control lever further forward. If I leave the lever in that forward position once I crest the hill, it takes off at full speed. So basically what I have to do is constantly control the speed with the hand lever. I don't think this is normal. Shouldn't I be able to place the lever in a certain position and the tractor would keep a consistent speed whether uphill, down or flat? Couple things I have done or checked with no change - 1. Changed trans fluid and filter. 2. Checked 'push valves' for proper operation. I didn't take these apart but they pop right back up when depressed. 3. The speed lever doesn't move on its own so I'm thinking the linkage and damper shock are fine. Also no excessive play in the shift or linkage. Any ideas? Am I correct in thinking this is not normal? Thank you in advance.

332 what kinda shape is your drive belt in ? and has it ever been replaced ? It could very well be slipping when put under a load. Hopefully thats all it is.
Good Luck .....

What year is your 332? There are a couple different hydro system linkages.

Was this happening before you changed the fluid and filter or did it start after?

Machines will slow some going up hill..... Think of a truck going up a hill... You have to press the accelerator to keep a constant speed. How does it handle on flat ground? And big changes in speed?

A 332 is a shaft driven unit. No belts to slip. :fing02:

Yes, this was happening prior to oil/filter change. JD dealer suggested trying it after checking that the 'push valve' lever is in the correct position and also that the push valves themselves pop up on their own - They do. Yes to running throttle wide open.

Ok,does the tractor seem to go fast with the lever is as far as the lever will go?one other you might check is the brakes,if you press the brakes and they don't return, the hydro lever won't go as far forward as it needs to go because it hits the brake mechinsum.

Pull back on the brake pedals and see if they move backward.

Yes it goes fast with lever all the way forward but only on flat ground. If I come to a hill it slows way down. Engine rpms stay the same. Brake pedals come all the way back up to the stop on their own.

When they do that,NORMALLY there's some linkage worn but you said you thought the linkage was fine, someone else more knowledgeable will be along soon.

I wonder one of the keys have been left out of one of the wheels causing slowdown on hills.
In gear can you press one brake at a time and cause it to slow?

My 318 did the same thing...worn linkage was the culprit
Worn linkage it is! Moving the shift linkage by hand it seemed there was very little play. Then I got ambitious and decided to pull it all out and eliminate the linkage from the equation. A little play here and a little play there, a worn pivot bolt, a worn bushing. All these "little bits" together added up to enough play to cause the speed control problem. It's like a new tractor! The total cost of the parts was $18.00. If you need to do this, set aside a good chunk of time - it's a son-of-a-gun job getting that shift tower out! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Glad you got it solved, but no one believes you have a 332 until we see pictures.......

Will you post a list of the parts you replaced? I too have a 332 that behaves the exact same way yours did. Thanks.

Look at that a 140, a 332, and a 944 - Nice!

Just finished the 140 last week. It now has a rebuilt engine and power steering. The 332 was rescued from the scrap pile 2 years ago and was my first garden tractor restoration. I picked up the 944 3 years ago from a friend for 5 bills. It didn't run. After a new fuel pump, battery and crank sensors, she started and purred like a kitten. I have completed a lot of maintenance on it since then and finally topped it off with a first-class paint job in the Spring of 2015.
