This is a 318 with a rebuilt motor, 3 point hitch, new tires, new battery, always maintained with a 46 inch deck. It would be perfect for me if it had the 38 inch deck. Perhaps I could find a 38 and swap for the 46 if I purchase it. The owner wants $1500 and says he has the receipts for the last 8 years including the engine rebuild and all other work done.

Question is: Is it worth the $1500 and are 38 inch decks available

That sounds like a steal of a deal,
but I’m sure the John Deere guys will chime in

So, not a steal, about where the prices are for a decent 318 if not a little high right now. This is in PA though so your area that might be a good deal. The 38 inch deck for the 318 isn't impossible to find but they weren't really common on them. Probably the 2nd best cutting deck for the 318 behind the 50 inch.

I've got a 38" deck on my 322 that I would swap. I think they are the same but not sure,PA318Guy would know. Where are you located?

318 and 322 have same arms and everything, should be only a belt difference since the 322 has slightly different PTO.

Here is for the 38 inch deck:

Here is for 46 inch deck: (Edit: missed the 318 belt)

I can't understand why the belts for the 38 are so much more then the 46. The last time I put a primary belt on I bought one from the dealer and started thinking about the price. Put the part# in on line and got one for $20. It's been on for 3 years with no problem.

Worth it. Price a 3 pt. hitch, a new battery, set of new tires, rebuilt (overhauled?) engine.
Decent shape per the photo (except on the RH side = front axle cap missing, no mower deck discharge chute). Bear in mind that the last new 318 came out in 1992. This or that part may be worn out and need replacing.

38, 46, 50 decks for the 316Onan/318/322/330/332 all mount up the same. The 38 is not a very common deck on these machines, and rather hard to find, so if someone offers up a 38 for a 46 swap, that may get you what you need pretty quickly, if it's not too far away.

The price is in the ballpark for what they go for in the northeast.

I have a 316 Onan, a 318 & 2-322s, and I don't understand what a slightly different PTO means. They all appear the same to me?

Mounted a bit higher due to yanmar block which is why the diesel's require a different belt.
HHHHMMMM I didn't know that. Good info. I used the belt off my 314 when I swapped the deck 50" from that to my 332 and it worked fine. I guess the snow blower belt would be different also then?

It was a surprise to me too when I went from the 318 to the 322. I just figured they were all the same!! From what I can tell they are about 1 inch longer for the Yanmar machines.
