I am replacing the front steel hydraulic lines on the left side of the tractor due to a leak from a hole in one of the lines. It appears that the only way to get the one line out is to take out the cross shaft that operates the brakes. Anyone have any tricks on getting this one out?

If you have an engine hoist, it might be easier to remove the engine mount bolts and raise the engine a couple inches, then pull the line out the front.

I'm not sure if one will be easier than the other, I replaced my front lines when the engine out of the tractor.

Now that I've looked through some old photos, it looks like the line runs between the brake shaft and the steering sector shaft. I had my steering shaft out when I worked on the lines since I converted to power steering.

Probably the best bet is just to take the brake shaft out. Otherwise you have to tear half the tractor apart to pull the steering shaft.

That's what I figured I would have to do. To pull the brake shaftbit looks like there are pins in the ends of the shafts? Can those just be punched out and reused or is there a better/easier or correct way of doing it?

I was able to remove the brake shaft from the parts tractor without much trouble. I have the two lines out from the left side. Hope to get the lines out of the good tractor in the next few days and put in the good ones. Give everything on the bottom side a good greasing and flush and refill the hydro. Picking up a four way hydraulic blade on Friday.

If you've never had one before, a 4 way blade does not disappoint. :fing32:

The blade was my FIL's. I've used it a few times in the past on his 322. My MIL still uses the 322 to mow but doesn't use the blade. The 317 is actually my 9 YO son's tractor. He sold his four wheeler and did a little horse trading to buy a tractor lol. Only kid I know that would rather drive a tractor than an atv. I'll use a blower on the 112 hydro lift. He can push the snow with his 317.
