I just thought I would show a brief thread on my 317 cleanup and repair. Won't be as extensive as some of these threads but may be of some interest to you guys. I finally got around to tearing this thing down, what a job trying to get that motor out! I have to replace the drive shaft, as well as rebuild the steering gear. Naturally the drive shaft was rusted onto he engine which made getting the engine out more difficult. My son in law was here to help, and my chain hoist sure came in handy! Next up is the power washer. Adam

Well I didn't have much time tonight after work but I still got the 317 power washed and I got the drive shaft removed from the engine. That turned into a bit of a job since the shaft was rusted to the engine shaft. When the new shaft goes on so will the anti-seize. Check out how bad the old drive shaft was. Adam

I removed the steering gear and throughly cleaned it all up with brake clean. Then rebuilt it with all new parts. If anyone would like a parts list for the parts I replaced I will post them if you want. I can't wait to feel how responsive this thing will be. Adam

Since the steering tube is a press fit and mine was still loose I just couldn't live with the play I had. So I scavenged a steering tube brace off my 140 parts tractor, cleaned and painted it up and mounted on the 317. Absolutely rock solid now! I don't know why Deere ever quit putting these on their tractors?

I pulled all the tin from the engine, gave it a decent cleaning and readied the engine for the new drive shaft with some anti seize

Reassembled the rest of the tractor, and besides a little solenoid issue (LOL) got her running sweet! Was even able to spread 50 pounds of grass seed and 150 pounds of fertilizer with her.

All in all this was a lot of work, but MOST of it was enjoyable and the tractor sure is worth it! Happy tractoring, Adam

k91, yes I have a small herd of Deere! I am down to four currently and my 430 is my main mowing tractor now. Makes cutting 3 1/2 acres enjoyable. Adam

Looks great. Though, who cares about the 317, I want to see pictures of that 430 now.

Adam,

Thanks for the pictures. I just started my diesel truck up and I am ready for a road trip to MO, so just let me know how much and where I am going to and I will be there by tomorrow night. That 430 is pretty. What year is it?:praying:

Glockem, I really don't have that many pictures of this tractor so here are a few dirty dusty pictures of the 430 from just a few minutes ago. Adam

You guys crack me up! I hope my address is no where on this site! The tractor is an 85 and I bought it from the original owner with 658 original hours. I always wanted a 430 myself and I can tell you the tractor does live up to the hype and exceeds all my expectations. The Yanmar diesel is like a locomotive engine, and it pushes my 60" deck with ease , regardless of how tall or thick the grass is, and will keeps the same sweet growl all day long. The power steering is effortless! And with a 26" turing radius, turning brakes, and a 60" deck it is practically a zero turn if you want it to be. The suspension seat and the Hi-Low rear end is also very nice! Adam
