I'm thinking of looking at a 316 sitting out at a farm around the corner. Ad says it's a low hour two owner tractor, has a sprayer attachment already custom made and mounted on the back, has a snowthrower, blade and a cutting deck, looks like a 46 or 48 deck". It's in fairly good condition, hood is all there, a few bumps and bruises. Photo is below.

The guy wants $1,250 for the 316 and sprayer, $1,650 OBO for all of it. A new tow behind sprayer is $300 and I could really use the snow blower/blade for the driveway. Seem reasonable? I was thinking of bringing $1,500 cash and seeing if that would work.

I already have a 1993 LX188, a 1998 345, and a 180, all Kawasaki engines, and I've had good luck with them. I've never had an Onan engined Deere before. Tractor Data says they are air cooled 2 cylinders, either 16hp or 18hp depending on the year. I did a search and read the posts that came up, but didn't see anything horribly damning for an old tractor.

What should I know about the Onan? Parts an issue for the engines or the 316? I seem to recall reading somewhere that they end up getting repowered by Honda or other engines and I don't typically read that about other JD's but maybe it happens and I just don't know about it.

I'm guessing the blower needs a front PTO so that rules out my other tractors, blade may fit?

Thanks for any comments/advice!

If it has the Onan it is most like the P218G, There are parts available for Onans but some just don't want to repair (rebuild), they want a drop in solution, where you'll pay for a true drop in solution. Some will just drop an engine in and not have the front PTO so that will mean (no MMM deck or Snow Blower/thrower). Then there is the Voltage/Amperage issues, many do not have the 20 amp capacity unless you order it that way, which means $$$ because most are a lot less. So it all depends. What is you pain/$$$ level.

That looks like a 50" deck. Price seems reasonable if the blower and blade are decent condition. I've owned a bunch of Onans, not bad if they are not worn out. On the Onan 316s (there was an older Kohler powered 316) the earlier 1983-1986 Onans were 16 hp, and did not have an oil filter, so not as good as the later 316 Onans that were 18 hp, with an oil filter. Attachment that fit this tractor won't work on any of your other listed tractors.

I think everything I would point out has been covered. Onan's are good engines. The B43E is a less desirable engine as compared to the P218G. I'm thinking that machine should have the B43E since the seat is the non-flip up variety.

To me the price is a little high in either case but if you are happy with the deal go for it! Good luck!

Thanks for the input, as usual, you guys have told me exactly what I needed to know.

If it's an 18hp, I'll think about it. If not, I'll let it go.

I'm with the rest of the guys $1500 would be a good deal $1400 would be better, 16hp or 18hp. They are tough old tractors and implements are reasonable to buy.

Weather it's 16 or 18 is not a big deal to me my 16hp Kohler singles in that 300 style tractors work great. They are easy to work on and you can find parts all day long.

I think 1960140 is correct that does look like a 50" deck. In good shape they are worth $350 all day, plow $150-$200, snow blower $200-$300, mounted sprayer $75-$150

So roughly $900 for the accessories, That means $600 for the tractor.

I have gone diesel, but if I was looking for a gasser I would go for it with everything is has with it. my .02$ :tango_face_devil:

we want pics after you get it. :tango_face_wink:
