This should be a simple fix ...you can purchase a new idler and spring,they are not hard to install ....Jim
316 48" Belt Tension/Re-tension Assy
I'm having trouble with my mower deck drive belt Tension/Retension assy.
It does not seem to tighten the belt and looks like a spring is sprung on one side of the pulleys. Also the small bar that measures the tension is not working either. Is there a rebuild kit for this or is it time to bring it in the shop and let them fix it?

It's probably never been lubricated (there is a grease fitting), and the spring which also acts as a belt guide, is most likely broken. As Jim indicated, these are easy to fix. But if you take the mule drive off the tractor and wish to have it repaired, you at least don't have to take the entire tractor to the dealer.

And improper belt routing is how at least one person I know trashed his spring and a new belt.
