I have been thinking about what is needed for a front PTO (no speed reducer) for the 24G. Yes the engine speed will have to be reduced to about 2200 to maintain stock PTO speeds. To do that either add a tach to the dash or replace the ammeter with a tach.

There are two options in tachometers. The VDO Vision which has a black bezel or go with the more expensive VDO Viewline. The VDO gauges are IP65 rated for water resistance. (Images are clickable.) All gauges below are 2-1/16" diameter.

VDO Vision 333-156 $75

VDO Viewline with adjustable warning lamp. A2C53210903-S $112
Setting the lamp to turn on a 2300 RPM would be an almost perfect solution.

Cockpit Intl (Black) series 333-965 - $70

Viewline in white.

The Vision comes with black bezel only. The Viewline has a variety of bezels to choose from including black. white, and chrome.

Anyway, the front shaft that goes through the axle should cost around $50. The rest of the bits to take care of the wider frame of the 24G should not be too bad. I am planning to make some adapters for that.

I will also make a collar or extension for the lift rod.

All in all, I think it is doable and relatively cheap to adapt a standard front PTO kit for use on the 24G.

Prices for the tach range from about $75 - $115 depending on model.

Is the ammeter also 2-1/16" in diameter? I would think that being able to replace the tach for the ammeter without hacking up the dash would count for something on the uncommon 24G. I'm sure you have ideas already, but you could always make a small box for it and attach it somewhere. And if you're not worried about cutting a new hole, the tach would look pretty slick in the dash with the ammeter and hour meter.

The first gauge option is what I personally prefer. The warning light seems unnecessary to me, so I think I'd go with the basic model. It's cheaper and I also like the black bezel - unless the hour meter has some color besides black, in which case you might want to match it. However, I've run farm tractors for years at whatever engine speed results in a 540/1000 PTO speed using tachometers that don't have lights so I may be a bit biased. I'm also known to be a bit frugal.

Looking forward to the front PTO setup - but then I won't be able to harp on the 24G's lack of versatility anymore :D

What are you going to hang on the front PTO, and what about all that cooling talk that says run at WOT?
What am I going to run off the front? Anything I want. :sidelaugh

Inadequate cooling at 2200 RPM on a P224? I don't think it can happen. The fan/blower on the P224 engine is HUGE compared to a M18. If the engine did overheat, the Engine Light (oil pressure) lamp on the dash would light up. In my case it would also buzz. The 24G has a overheat sensor.

No, it is not for a Gravely Ron. It is a belt only reduction unit.

I have no idea what it is for. I have not seen anything quite like it before but I have led a sheltered life.

richard, and club
the wide open throttle thing is ********, in my opinion.
the harder you run it, the more heat you make.
3/4 throttle is more than enough 90% of the time.
I agree. The amount of heat generated is dependent on how much fuel is being burnt.

I am going to order the $111 tach and realized that various bezels are available. One is needed to install the gauge and wanted to make sure everyone is aware that a bezel is mandatory.

The VDO Viewline gauge is not available yet.

That means that at this time, the cheaper Vision 33-163 is the only way to go.

EDIT: The correct number is 333-156

Richard have you found a solution where the gauges match one another? Either all new or a combination of new and factory? I have a matching ammeter and hourmeter, I'd love to add a tach and have them all match, even if it meant all new.

All of the Vision gauges match,

If you get a larger gauge like the 333-163 (3-3/8") then the tach will also display hours. That tach is available.

If the bezel color and style needs to match, the maybe a Viewline is what is needed. The bezel is available as rounded or triangular and in black, white, and chrome.
