Is there a good aftermarket tire that is cheaper then john deere but last just as long? I'm looking for the same style as the original John Deere tire. What does NHS stand for? Do I need more then 2 ply, does more ply cost that much more?
Maybe a different tread would be better for me, they sometimes spin on my steep grade. So I keep my winter chains on year round.

I think Deere sales tires for the most $$. I've bought my tires at summit racing & millers. 2 ply is the norm for rear tires, most times more plys are more money, also depends how popular a certain tire is.

For lawn mowing in most circumstances, 2-ply is adequate. If you're in the habit of carrying heavy rear end implements or ballast, 4-ply is preferred.

I prefer to shop for tires at the local tire shops such as Goodyear unless I find a deal at a farm store or other business to keep on hand for when I do need new tires. They can order in just about any tire with one or two days notice and no shipping charges.

The only time that my GT didn't wear chains in 24 years was when I was replacing the old, worn out set for new.

Tread patterns available for Carlisle tires.

With that size tire you can find a multitude of tread designs and costs to suit your needs. I punched sticks thru my 2-ply tires when I had them and always had flats. 4-ply fixed that problem for me.

For a traction improvement you can go to a more aggressive tread if you want. Some of us use ATV tires for the most traction. I have a bunch of hills and holes and spun my turf tread all the time. My ATV tires do not spin so they don't tear up the grass.

Any 23x10.5-12 tire will fit it. Do a google search for them and go crazy.

Mounting a 4 ply tire on to the rim is really hard. 2 ply is not as hard. So factor in who is doing the mounting of the tires. If it is going to be done as a DIY project, I recommend 2 ply. 4 ply is a b/i/t/ch to mount. How do I know? Been there before and done that. LOL.

Cant speak for the 4-ply turfs but the 4, 4-ply 12" ATV tires I mounted on my 2 GTs were really easy. I didnt even use bars on the last 2 I mounted. Sprayed the beads with cooking spray and pushed them on by hand.

If stock turfs spin and require you to use chains I would highly recommend trying a more aggressive tire. I think there is a good chance a more aggressive tread pattern would let you get by without using chains. I would also consider filling the rear tires with liquid ballast.

With small tires, it's hard to find a 4 ply tire. Many will say 4 PR. That's 4 play rating. Not actual 4 ply.

I'm done with turf tires. IMO the HDAP tire JD uses have what I would call a very good all around tread pattern. They don't rip the grass, spin on a wet surface, I can push dirt with the 48" blade and use ground engaging attachments up and down steep hills without any issues. OP, go for the HDAPs.

You can find HDAPs for a very low price at the link below;

Most tires including passenger car tires are ply rated now. It signifies the load range of the tire.
