Hi all!

Just jointed the forum this morning and am looking for some help identifying a part on a 2240 John Deere early serial number.

When I picked up the tractor the rod bearing on the number three cylinder was seized and someone had partially torn into the tractor to determine the problem. Basically I ended up with a tractor frame and a bucket of parts. I went through the engine and did a full rebuild and almost have the engine complete but I have this mysterious part that I cant identify. I looked through the parts book and the exploded views of the engine assembly and have not found anything that resembles this item.

Can anyone help my identify this or tell me if it even goes with this tractor?

Thanks for the help!

That looks like a detente (ie, for a shift lever with multiple positions, that gives you the feel of clicking into each gear).

Somewhere, there's a hole that the outer part fits into, and it should stick out a bit on the other side, spring goes inside, and then something goes behind it for the spring to press against.

Part in photo isn't a shifter detent because JD utility tractors such as 2240 utilize spring loaded 1/4 & 5/16 balls for shift rail detents. I'm scratching my head & trying to think where part would fit. My 2nd thought is engine oil pressure relief valve but it's been many yrs since I've seen this valve in real life.

I dug into this some more last night to see if there were any levers or linkages that might have something as described. I didn't find anything on linkages but I did notice a similar shaped hole on the back of the crankshaft after I removed the engine from the stand. I then went back and looked at the parts diagram and sure enough there is a plug listed for the back end of the crank.

I am still not completely sure what the plug is for and I don't see the spring anywhere on the diagram.

Does anybody know why they put a removable plug in the back end of the crank?

RE Crank shaft plug;
Parts has a note that says "minus Reverser/HI-LO", so only needed when these options are not present. Maybe to keep a transmission shaft from moving too far forward?

One Oil line at clutch housing has a spring (51) check valve, but not a plug. Maybe spring goes there?

Engine oil pump has spring (27) for pressure control, maybe spring goes there?

Rocker arm shaft has plug (1) at each end. Maybe you only have one plug installed?

For early serial number is it below 350,000?
Do you have the Reverser OR HI-LO transmission?

Yes, the serial number is pre - 350,000. I have never operated the tractor and am a little unfamiliar with the controls on these models. What is the reverser and how do I tell if I have one?

As far as high low goes, I was just looking this morning and from what I can tell there were two transmission options, the first is the collar shift which consisted of 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds. 4 gears in two different ranges.

The second option appears to have 16 forward and 8 reverse speeds. 4 gears with two ranges and a hi-lo power shift.

SO in this case I need to know if it has the power shift option? Is that right?

I attached some pictures for everyone's reference. Not sure if we can tell from these if there is a reverser or not... and some are just for fun!

Reverser OR HI-LO will have a lever just like the throttle lever (on dash right side), but on the left side.
Reverser will have a label with a tractor and arrows ( an arrow pointing forward and an arrow pointing backwards) to show which way the tractor will move when the lever is moved.

HI-LO will have same lever, but label will be a Turtle and Rabbit to indicate LO and HI.

You can NOT have BOTH a Reverser AND HI=LO. You could have EITHER or NEITHER option.

I don't see the lever on left of steering wheel in your pictures. It sure looks like the crankshaft plug to me. In your first image, the plug has a spring in it. The crankshaft plug has no spring, so that must go somewhere else. The spring looks as if it could be the right size for item 51 inside the red circle in Zebra5's post.

Shown below are the spec's for spring utilized in check valve in Zebra5's post. That same spring is utilized in the htd pump & check valve on top of hyd oil reservoir. I agree plug resembles crankshaft plug but no spec's for plug are available on JD parts site.
