Just a quick question for my edification. The 12 HP in my 222 is a bit tired, runs well but burns oil. At this point I am planning to freshen it up/rebuild it, but if I come across a good deal on an already re-done, or low hour engine I might just swap it out, especially if it's a higher HP engine.

I was bumming around Craigslist and I found this engine a few hours from me: http://maine.craigslist.org/grd/1338722394.html

Looks like it's a K series and the overall engine configuration looks very similar to mine. Would I be able to pretty much bolt this engine onto my 222 or would it be more trouble than its worth? It's not that I need more power, as the 12 HP seems to do just fine since all it has to do is churn the hydraulic pump and spin the mower deck, I just figure if it's easy to upgrade...why not, right?

Let me know if I'm crazy or not ;) :thanku:

The Kohler K341 is differant than the 241,301, and 321. It may have the wrong crank size and oil pan. I think it might work with some TLC but take some measurements. Case/Ingersoll used a B43M when they had the 16 HP. 226.

Swapping engines can be done, however you must exercise care in what you buy. Some cranks may be longer - not an issue as you can cut them and if the diameter is different then that can be solved by buying a new lovejoy.

The larger issue is that some blocks are different at the block "skirt" and pan area, for an example a Wheel Horse block is not usable in a Case/Ingersoll as they are bigger.

Now the above can be overcome as I am doing one right now for a project for my son, but it is very involved and generally should be avoided.

I tried to look at the link but it's gone so I'm not sure what it was. Basically any 12 or 14 hp Kohler from a Case/Ingersoll should be a drop in swap. If you source an engine from some other application you need to make sure the oil pan and cranks are the same. A different diameter/length crank can usually be used pretty easily by getting the appropriate lovejoy coupling for the new engine.
