2166 won't start - new battery

2896 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  lbarnes
Hi,

Went out to the back yard with the tractor, turned it off, did a chore, hopped back on and it won't start. It just clicks. We tried a new battery but same thing. The fuses look fine. Just hoping someone could point me in some direction.

Thanks,
Lenora

Locate solenoid. And turn key on and take screw driver and touch the 2 big termerials. Motor should turn over.
make sure the PTO switch that engages the grass cutting blades is turned off.

It's a safety feature.... the tractor won't turn on if the blades are engaged.

Common mistake. Common occurence if you have kids that like to press buttons or pull levers when you are not around.

:Stop::Stop: Hold on there pardner!! Don't try messing with the solenoid unless the key is OFF!! If it's on the engine could start and you could be opening yourself up to injury because jumping the solenoid you are bypassing the start circuit you are also bypassing all of the Safety interlocks (seat sw,, PTO, neutral sw. etc..)!! Another thing- you only need to jump from the battery side of the solenoid to the positive (small) terminal on the side of the solenoid! Jumping the big terminals makes a big spark and transfers a lot of electrical energy! You have to understand exactly what you are doing before jumping things.. Just my $.02

Be careful.. Here's a thread on start trouble shooting:

Thanks. I'll proceed carefully in the AM. I appreciate the link to troubleshooting start issues. I definitely checked the PTO switch--been burned on that too many times so I know it's not that. :thanku:
