210 Belt Tensioner Question

8168 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  MichaelTJD60
Just put the mule drive/tensioner back on my 210. I am not sure where the tension spring hooks up? Does it hook up to the main hanger? Or does it hook up to the little sliding arm on the small pulley? (Pic 1) Also, the small pulley seems to be rubbing against the frame just a little bit, is it supposed to do this? And one more thing. Can the tractor be driven with just the main drive pulley on the crankshaft? Or does the PTO have to be on it? (Pic 2)

If you look in the right of the 2nd pic, the hole in the picture is where the spring fits into. The tensioner spring should be perfectly level left to right.

Ok got that squared away. Do you know anything about the drive pulley?
Another question. I put a new handle on the tensioner spring. Does the spring actually serve a purpose or does it just sit there? I can't figure it out. My spring is just kinda stiff and won't stretch at all.
You turn the knob on the front of the tractor until the spring touches the front. The turn it back 1/2 a turn. There should be a threaded secion in the front of the spring that the stud on the knob screws into. That is what pulls the spring. That is how the mule drive belt is tightened. Roger
Work the spring back and forth, it should be fine.

The tensioner handle should have the lock nut behind it. Tighten the spring with the belt on, the belt will have to be stretched(mowed with in decent grass for a little), then tighten the handle again . On as hard to tighten it, turn it until the spring stretches enough to firmly hold the belt. The spring coils should be about 1/32 away from each other.

Well I currently have no mower deck and so I have no belt for it. I guess putting on a new deck and belt will fix the problem? I won't have to worry about that for a while. Not going to mow with the 210 right now.

Gotta find that 47 mower deck for spring :howdy:
Time to revive this thread. I'm in the process of replacing the tensioner spring. I ordered a new plug (the square stop piece) that is supposed to thread into the flat end of the spring, but I cannot get the piece threaded into the spring. It looks as though it might catch the threads if I can stretch the spring, but I have no idea how to do it. Anyone ever replaced that small plug piece on the end of the tensioner spring?
