Just bought an S240 for $1599 from the local Ag-Pro. It has 50 hours. This is my first John Deere. I set the cutting height to 4 inches. After cutting the lawn, it seems like it is cutting a lot under 4". I know there are adjusters under the tractor, should these be moved for a higher cutting height ?

Yes, you should level the deck. Most people don't worry if the numbers match the actual cut height or not. If you are concerned you can probably get pretty close, but it will likely take some back and forth and side to side leveling, multiple times to get it exactly where you want it.

The advantage to the gauge method is that not only can you get the deck level, but you can also find out how far the blades are from the ground. If you're right and "4" is nowhere near 4", the gauge would show you that.

It's well worth the $7 for the gauge if you're going to be picky about the cut and the adjustments like most of us.
