2014 X739 - 54" deck, 54HC power flow bagger, 47" blower. How much should I pay?

Hi guys,

Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong place.

I have decided to go with a X5XX or X7XX sized tractor for my lawn and snow needs. Most on here have persuaded me the x300 is just not gonna cut it for me at this time.

I found a low hour used X739 on Craigs. I went to see it today and the guy selling is a super nice older gentleman who is downsizing from his 1 acre lot. Empty nesters.

He showed me his receipt. He bought it new in early 2014.
Here is a link to the ad and it has a itemized receipt on it:

2014 John Deere X739 mower/bagger/snow blower

2014 X739
about 100 hours
54" deck
still has full warranty left
47" quick hitch snow blower with weights
14 Bushell hopper assembly
14 bushell bagger
54hc power flow
Arm rest
& more you can see on the receipt.

He is asking $16,500 which I think is a lot be he did say he is open to offers.

What would this set up be worth today and how much should I offer? What is the absolute maximum I should pay for this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Check here for current price idea, that sounds expensive. You can step into a SCUT with a loader for that price. Granted it won't have the SB but it has a diesel, 3pt, a rear PTO and stronger hydraulics.

Here is a great comparison of the X7 to a SCUT posted by Roy Rector. He shows the in's and outs of ownership, so by far the best selling ploy to upgrade.

Good grief that is a heap of cash!!!!!! You can buy a new set up like that online and get free delivery and 15% off attachments for about what he is asking..... It's a nice rig, but year old machines like this are not easy to sell.... A new one is often times cheaper because financing is cheaper new.......

Just shopping at Deere.com I came up with
13k for tractor and deck
2 k for bagger
3 k for blower and hitch

And I bet most dealers will work with you on that price... If not go to the next dealer.....

I was at the local JD dealer yesterday

They had TWO one year old used JD SCUT's on the lot for sale with pricing higher than new ones,, :swow:

I asked why the high pricing.

Both were returned for attempted re-sale out of divorces,,,
marriage issues, and tractors, do not mix,,, :sidelaugh

The salesman told me he could offer the identical machine to me brand new for less money,,, :fing20:

They were "1" Series machines,,, I was really looking at "3" Series,,, no, I did not buy,,, :hide:

Wow that’s a lot of money- but a very nice tractor, however it is a year old, ¼ of the warranty gone. If you like the set up offer him 14K – anything more than that you are better off going new and taking advantage of Deere’s financing offers

Nice mow-chine, and it has all the toys. I have all the same stuff for my X7, (blower, hitch, weights, 14bu bagger) and I can tell you that finding all the attachments for an X7 used for a good price is a pain in the you-know-what.

With that said, he's going to have a hard time selling it for that price. Offer him 13-14k cash and be willing to walk. He bought it new and is dumping it a year later - so let him take a bath.

Great advice guys! Im going to offer $12k cash and see what he says. It sounds like the max I should pay is $13-14k. If he bites great, if not ill keep looking!

13-14K would be an excellent deal for that setup, plus you won't be paying tax like you would on a new one.

Yah I don't think it is as bad of a deal as others here do. Price that out new at the dealership and you are saving money anyway. If a new one with the same setup is indeed $3,500 more is it worth it to spend that just for 96 less hours and 1 year warrantee?

Well I offered 12K and he said the lowest he could go is $15,500.

I still think that is high and I doubt he will ever sell it because not many people can come up with $15k cash in hand.

Oh well.

I may go back to buying a 44 hour 2011 X300 with blower for $2700. That may be a better deal.

I just also found this:
X720
2012 X720 with 445 hours on it
Still with warranty until June 2016
54" MOWER DECK AND POWER FLOW BAGGING SYSTEM
No blower but he can include one for extra $1500.
Asking $6500 without blower

what is the difference between the X739 and the X720?

I've seen those "that's the lowest I can go" prices drop dramatically after a few weeks.

The X739 is the top of the line gas mower that JD makes. It has EFI, AWD, and AWS. The X720 is the basic model, it doesn't have AWD or AWS.

Realistically speaking the seller should have paid ~17-18k when new. Looking through that invoice it appears he paid full retail for every single piece. For a package like that there should have been at least $1,000 or more in discounts. If it was just the tractor and deck... maybe $500... most dealers are willing to cut $500 somewhere on just the base X7-- and deck. But for a package like that, if I got an estimate from a dealer for full retail I would call the next dealer down the road and not waste my time.

Before anyone makes a comment about where I live.... I realize that in some areas of the country there are fewer dealers than here in the midwest... but the fact remains that you can drive a few hours to save coin like that.

In the end we are talking about a year old machine that the owner is trying to sell for as much as he can because he remembers writing the check for it a year ago.... no doubt that has to hurt!!!

Comparable machines at a dealer are running around $11,000 for the tractor and deck:
+2,000 for a used bagger
+2,500 for a used blower
$15,500 dealer price...... so he is willing to accept dealer pricing on his machine....

I think around $14,000 is an acceptable price for the risk of buying a year old machine.

That is a bit of a change.... X7-- to a X300?

Not many people can just come up with $15k with a wiggle of their nose... I keep trying but nothing ever happens.... the dog just stares at me.... My guess is that he will be sitting on it a while at that price. It will be interesting to watch......

I completely agree with you! I bet he will be sitting on it for a while. Plus, when I went to his house he hasn't sold it yet. He was "thinking" about downsizing.

I think he put in on craigs to get feelers out. If some sucker pays him asking he'll sell. If he gets lower offers he will just keep using it and at least he can say to his wife "hunny, i'm really trying hard to sell this thing!"

lol. I don't think he cares much about the $.

On another thought, what do you guys think about this deal:
2011 John Deere X534
2011 X534
293 hours (no warranty left)
54" deck with mulch kit
Asking $4900

Is the X534 a good machine?
How much should I offer on this?

What is your budget, if you don't have one put together future plans for the machine of your needs and then we can steer you in the right direction other wise we'll be advising you on everything from an X300 to a new SCUT. Go to a dealership and grab the brochures for garden tractors and the implements, and a "1 Family" SCUT literature, this can be found online but paper side by side I find is easier to make a decision. Once you have narrowed the machine you want/need we can get into prices that are fair for the machine when you ask about them. The guy selling the goldmine didn't do this and as MR Beef pointed out payed full retail.

@Father Deerest:
I really don't have a budget. I want the best deal possible for something that works well for me.
At this time the X5XX would be my best bet for what I need.

Thanks!

I would check out that X720 you posted.
The X534 you posted is priced too high IMO.
The X300 you are looking at is priced way too high. They only cost $3,100 brand new at full MSRP. I wouldn't consider anything less than a X500. The X300 is very light duty especially for snow removal. Don't settle for anything smaller than a X500. The X500 and X700 series are garden tractors which is what you need.

Go check out that X720!

Thanks for the reply.

I think the x7xx may be overkill for me. Especially if I have to tell the wife I just spent the same amount on a tractor that we spent on our car, lol.

I emailed the guy selling the X534 and offered $3500 and he said no way. What would be a reasonable offer for a 250 hr 2011 machine like that?

As for the X300, I figured if I can get a good deal on it I can use it for a year or so and if it sucks i'll just sell it. May be a good entry point.

Do you really think $2700 is too much for a 2011 x300 with only 44 hours on it and it includes the 44" blower and weights and chains?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Bankingdom, I don't know about others, but when I am selling something I will never deal with a buyer unless they are standing in front of me. I have had buyers offer a price on something they have never even seen in person. I tell them, you come over look at the item and then I will entertain an offer. Too many want to make an offer but not show up anyway, or really don't even have the cash. If I can see the money it makes it harder to turn down a reasonable offer. Not always doable if it's a long distance purchase.
