I am going to look at a 1990 Ariens GT with the blower, deck, wheel weights, chains and a cab this weekend. The guy is asking 1000 less for the ariens. I am new to the older garden tractor scene so any info would help. Thanks.

A1 condition hum............... If it was a 20 hp, with power steering, diff lock and 60" or 48"mower deck with only 250 hours. It would be priced right.

Call him, offer 1,000 less, Make no mistake these tractors are tanks. With right and left brakes and a bullet proof hyro trans.

As has been said, it's too much for what it is. Without a deck, it should not be more than $1500, in my opinion. What I don't know is how it matches up with the Ariens. At $1500 for either one and with a deck on the Ariens, they may be in the same league.

That ariens is the same as a New Holland, Very nice tractors, If its in good shape, I would think its worth every penny of 1500. Three point, with hydraulic lift nice. I don't know that much about them other than they are capable machines.
I did notice that the sunstar looks like it has power steering which is odd for an 18 hp. It might also have the diff lock and Independent brakes. If that is the case you might beable to justify going a little higher than 2000. But that could possibly mean that the motor was replaced hummmmmmm........
What do you think redmule? look at the picture again and tell me if you see the PS cylinder.

I can't tell if it has power steering or not. Power steering was some thing you could add to the sunstar as well as the dual brakes. No oil filter on the 18 hp--no hi-lo range. The 18 hp was what it was at the time and that was a good lawn and garden tractor.

That sunstar is at a local hardware chain in the west bend area, I looked at one if not that one and they wanted to much for it by about $1000. I don't think it had an hour meter but I don't recollect for sure they had several machines at the time.

There was a 7119 that some had near by with tiller, 2 blowers 42", deck and cab for $1500 which had a newer motor put in it, I was thinking about that one but my 5216 came up the next day and it was a mute point for me. I can check if you would like and see if its still there it was near Port Washington/Saukville area.

I have different models of both the Ariens and the Sunstar. The 18HP Sunstar and
GT 18 Ariens are comparable tractors.Almost all the Sunstars I have seen 18 or 20 HP have power steering the one 18HP I have is the only one I've seen without it the other 4
18HP have it.Both snowblowers work good. The Ariens is also a whole lot cheaper and easier to add 3pt to than the Sunstar plus most GT 18 models had rear PTO which is costly to add to a Sunstar. Both are priced at the upper limit for sure especially the Sunstar.

Cant comment on the Ariens due to not knowing a thing about them..

Now that Sunstar. That one does have power steering and single brakes. Says it has a 18hp Kohler "Command". The Command didnt come along until 1993 model year. I would say that one is a 89-91 model. 1988 had exhaust strait out the front grill, and 89-91 had that decal scheme. Soooooo, "250hrs" may be on new hour meter or new engine. :dunno:

The blower is worth $400-$450. I would value the tractor w/o mower deck around $1200-$1300. So total package $1800 to $2000 max. No mower deck IMO hurts the value of a garden tractor. :fing32:

I've purchased Simplicity products from the Simplicity dealer that is selling this Sunstar that the OP is discussing.

Knowing that Simplicity dealer (they've always treated me fairly and have given me great deals on gear), I would assume the tractor has gone through the shop and probably runs well. I've seen it from a slight distance while browsing their inventory and it appears to be a decent looking setup in person.

I'm about 20-25 minutes from that store and may pass through that area on Saturday in case anyone wants a up close third party opinion on the setup.
