in the sticky part of the 9n/2n/8n it will show you how to read the serial number and 9ns were produces from 39-41 starting in 42 2ns were produced 9ns were no longer produced. There really isn't any difference between the 2.

Yes 2 transmissions the Sherman is like a 2 speed. But it raises or lowers all of the tractors original Gears. The Sherman is a sealed unit.

Another way to look at it the the Sherman trans changes input speed into the tractors transmission

oh totally understand have you tried to clean the area where the serial number is with like some sand paper,wire brush? make it easier to see.
