I have always had a starting problem if I didn't use my Cub often.
Now, I have a new starter, solenoid, battery and ignition switch. It started fine for about 2 months.

Recently, I had not used it for about two weeks and it would not start again. No dashboard ignition lights when on/start.

If "jump" the solenoid, the starter will finally kick in and then start with the key every time after.

There is no electrical corrosion on any connector or terminal. Everything tight

I cant figure this out. Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I understand the starting circuit and will check again.

What I don't understand is why it would work, after the starter is jumped from the battery or solenoid.

It seems that the exact same problem is mentioned in the links of the discussion of other similar posts.

Because by doing that you are bypassing the starting circuit completely.. What the starting circuit does is transfer battery positive power to the starter. One side of the solenoid is hooked directly to the battery. The start circuit energizes an electro-magnet (small wires) that connects the large wires together to turn the starter... Reply with any questions..

I understand that. To clarify- The Cub will start with the key AFTER the solenoid is jumpered out OR the starter is hooked directly to the battery.

Once is is fired up it will start with the key for weeks or months until it is idle for a couple of weeks, or over the winter. Then It will NOT start with the key and that cycle continues over and over.

That Exact problem was posted in one of the links above. I have also seen the problem on other forums and no one can figure it out.

Wierd.. Next time it doesn't start check for 12V+ at the small terminal on the solenoid.. (Key turned to start) If it is present and the thing doesn't start check the ground supply to the solenoid. (hook test light to batt. positive) If OK, I'd replace the solenoid..

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I will do that. But as mentioned in the original post, I just put a new solenoid in, about the end of July.

I am an ex New Yorker. Long Island. I really miss the food !

Sorry- Forgot you replaced that! Gotta be a bad connection somewhere or even a faulty solenoid.. You know your ground is good because you can jump it and get it to go. By testing the start signal you can rule out everything else in the start circuit and then you are left with the solenoid itself.. How did the ignition switch plug look when your replaced the switch? was it dirty? Hit it with some contact cleaner as a poor electrical contact there could cause your problem..

Never been to Long Island as I live near Rochester.. I am still recovering from a fractured leg so I'm logging quite a bit of 'seat-time' though I'm finally working on some stuff in the shop.. One day at a time..:trink40:
